---and there are TOO many who fall into this category. Been a TECH fan 73 years, born a TECH fan. Seen a lot of rough years, a lot of great years and a lot of "in-between" years--that's college football. Hurting after bad games and reveling after great wins are the emotions of being a FAN. Bitching/anarchy against a current coach/team IS NOT. This has been a "strange" year (as have others)--but-- Ugag is this Sat. and it's the annual time to try and whoop the nadlickers. Don't be QUASI--it's HATE WEEK! ---(just an old GT fan's perspective).

Not 73 years, but a lot. Born a Tech fan, too. Voicing an emotional opinion is not being a quasi-fan. Like yourself, I've suffered thru Carson, Rodgers, Curry, Lewis, Gailey, and now Paul Johnson. I think I have seen enough to recognize a poorly prepared and poorly motivated team. And I think I can spot a program circling the drain. Like you, I had the misfortune of seeing a boatload of Georgia Tech football coached by Bobby Dodd. It set a standard that has been difficult for subsequent coaches to match and it probably unfairly colors my evaluation of all Tech coaches. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try to be better. And it certainly doesn't mean I won't be pulling for the Jackets the same as I cheered for them in 1967, 1980, 1994, and 2015. But if we trot out onto Grant Field the same team that played in Durham this past weekend, it will be a very long day for those in white and gold.

Yet, with all that success, Dodd only achieved one NC.

What's the quote? I don't think I've heard this one.

"Football is one of our great American games. It is the duty and responsibility of each of us to see that it is kept in its proper perspective, and that it is protected. We should see that it is used to attain the objectives that mean so much to our way of life.

We feel that the spectator can be most influential and instrumental in helping to achieve these objectives, if he will develop the right attitudes. May we suggest a few?

First, and foremost among these attitudes that must be developed, is the realization that in football there must be a winner and a loser (excepting the occasional tie). The fan who recognizes this principle gets a great deal more enjoyment from the game than one who becomes irritated, aggravated, and rambunctious when "his" team loses. We would never minimize the importance of winning, but it is very unfair to the coach, the player, and the school when the fan forgets it is impossible to "repudiate the law of mathematics"--i.e., there must be a winner and a loser.

It is important that each of us develop the art of appreciating great plays made by the opposition. We should always give our opponents credit, rather than criticize our team when the opposition makes a great play. We believe perfection in the execution of a great play in football is to be admired and appreciated, just as we appreciate and admire the work of a great artist in any field.

The spectator should remember the football players are just human beings. They perform at times under great pressure, and they, as all other earthly inhabitants, are likely to make mistakes. It behooves all of us to remember, "To err is human, to forgive, divine."

Finally, we should always keep uppermost in mind that football, with all its glamour, glitter, thrills and chills, plus everything that makes it great, has one thing more important than all of these combined--that is, the boy who plays it."

Robert L. "Bobby" Dodd
Head Coach and Athletic Director
Georgia Institute of Technology

I am not sure you have a point, but I have never ever expected National Championships, not even in 1990. The difference in Dodd's record, and the record other Tech coaches is that Dodd never, and I mean NEVER in twenty-two seasons, had a game like the one our team played Saturday. Never got beaten 51-7. Look it up. Playing in the SEC even when we lost five games a year, three or four would be one score losses---close, competitive games against the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU. He lost some disappointing games, but we had no MTSU or Kansas flops. And if we did lose, it was on the coaches, not the boys. I acknowledge his failings as Athletic Director. I don't know if he actively coveted that role--his ego is legend--or if his supporters pressured him into taking a position he was ill-suited for. His mistakes are glaring as an administrator. But as a coach his performance is unsurpassed given the field in his day was as unequal as it is today or more so.

*Kansas State

Bingo.

Now, tell me what’s really changed over the years in that regard.
Things may not be different in some respects, but anyone who compares Paul Johnson to Dodd has lost their minds. Johnson ain't even remotely in Dodd's league

Some great points. He was so close to having about 8 undefeated seasons. His losses to the powers of the SEC were hardly ever more than about 7 points. His mastery of field position and playing penalty free football was uncanny

I doubt Dodd would do any better than Johnson in today's college football. We're not evolving as fast as our opponents and dont provide the resources necessary to make those changes. What we have plenty of is what have you done for me today fans who expect Tech be as competitive as Bama every week and use every loss as an opportunity to bitch about the coach. Then they crawl under a rock until the first loss of next season when CPJ beats uga.
