Quasi Tech Fans

I doubt Dodd would do any better than Johnson in today's college football. We're not evolving as fast as our opponents and dont provide the resources necessary to make those changes. What we have plenty of is what have you done for me today fans who expect Tech be as competitive as Bama every week and use every loss as an opportunity to bitch about the coach. Then they crawl under a rock until the first loss of next season when CPJ beats uga.
It is hard to compare people from completely different eras, no doubt. The only things I can go on was the amazing competitiveness and his ability to literally out think other coaches.

Get off your high horse, Mr. Super Tech fan. Crawl under a rock? Why? The coach has lost this team, and, as you point out, other teams such as Virginia, Wake, NCST, Pittsburgh, Troy, Memphis, UCF, USF, are "evolving" faster than we. Perception is reality, but reality is also reality. We have a slim shot at beating Georgia BECAUSE they are 10-1 and playing for THEIR CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP next week. We, OTOH, are 5-5, having broken Duke's six game losing slide in the process. It is what it is. And so is our team ---MY team. And my team sucks right now.

Well you did crawl under your rock last year when we beat them. Here's to a win this saturday to send you crabby pants back under your rock again.

But as a coach his performance is unsurpassed given the field in his day was as unequal as it is today or more so.
This is one of the many reasons why I don't buy the argument that our academic profile prevents us from competing at the highest levels.

---and there are TOO many who fall into this category. Been a TECH fan 73 years, born a TECH fan. Seen a lot of rough years, a lot of great years and a lot of "in-between" years--that's college football. Hurting after bad games and reveling after great wins are the emotions of being a FAN. Bitching/anarchy against a current coach/team IS NOT. This has been a "strange" year (as have others)--but-- Ugag is this Sat. and it's the annual time to try and whoop the nadlickers. Don't be QUASI--it's HATE WEEK! ---(just an old GT fan's perspective).
I agree. This years team is frustrating because there is no consistency. We don't seem to be able to play a complete game. We show flashes of greatness and then follow it up with an egg. You usually know what you are getting week in and week out with a PJ team. Strange season.

Interesting. You don't like what I post, and you don't like when I don't post. :dunno:

His mistakes are glaring as an administrator. But as a coach his performance is unsurpassed given the field in his day was as unequal as it is today or more so.

His mistakes are why there is such a gap between us and top tier programs.

And the claim that Dodd was more disadvantaged than any GT coaches after him is an absolute joke.

It all goes back to QB play, IMO.

Please elaborate as to why you think Dodd was a failure, and had so many "mistakes"....this I want to hear

I don't think Dodd was a failure. The man is a legend for good reason.

Leaving the SEC was a mistake. Treating conference members like shit was a mistake.

You see, it's kind of like my opinion of Paul Johnson. I'm a huge fan, and think he should remain our coach for as long as he's interested. I also think he dug himself a hole in terms of recruiting and is still trying to dig his way out of it 9 years later. I think his coaching tenure will be tainted by his/the program's inability to staff a high-performing DC. However, I think the positives (competitiveness with UGA, ACC title runs, OB appearances/victory) very obviously outweigh the negatives.

Hindsight is 20-20, as they say. To say the decision to leave the SEC was Dodd's alone is not factual. Regardless, here is what really transpired: Bryant, and some of his cronies were literally signing 100 guys a year and holding "tryouts", and cutting guys. That is why over the years you run into a bunch of guys who claim to have "played for the Bear". Dodd was adamantly against those practices, and he asked the league, and Bryant to stop it....they lied to him about it. Couple that with a number of other factors that Dodd felt further limited Tech's ability to be competitive, and he and Harrison felt they would be better off as an Independent, while still playing their rivals: UGA, Aub, and Tenn.

I think most Tech fans at the time wanted to remain in the SEC, but Dodd felt that the rigors of playing an SEC slate, while not getting a 50/50 break would relegate Tech to Vandy status.

In the years post SEC, Tech went through a bunch of ups and downs, but mostly downs. Would remaining in the SEC been the right thing to do? Once again, that is hard to know. But understand this, NO ONE had a love for, and understood Tech (and it's limitations) more than Dodd. He was truly an on the sidelines genius as a coach, and yes, he got very little help from the BOR and the Administration, and it wore on him.

I get all of that. I don't think Dodd ever purposely did anything to hurt Tech. I think Paul Johnson really does try to put us in the best position possible to win football games.

I've suffered thru Carson, Rodgers, Curry, Lewis, Gailey, and now Paul Johnson.

So you've been miserable 37/51 years since Dodd. 75% of the time. And both the coaches you liked, Curry and O'Leary, used Tech as a stepping stone to other jobs.

There hasn't been, or may never be, another coach who not only had his teams play at a very high, national level, but was loved by and did more for his players going forward in life.

Look at his former players, and the impact they had on Atlanta and the state of Georgia.

As for the "disrespect" he showed other programs", I have no idea what that means. Because he left the SEC? Because he didn't see the need to travel to Oxford or Starkville to play?

It seems you have disdain for Dodd, and I can't figure out why. If I connect the dots, it seems you think he put Tech behind the 8 ball, and Johnson is basically the best answer we have because of it. Maybe I'm wrong

You're just making stuff up now - responding to things I've never said, implied, or even thought. I have as much disdain for Bobby Dodd as I do for Paul Johnson, which is to say absolutely none.

I guarantee that Coach Dodd thought he ööööed up wrt to the MS schools when we failed to get voted back into the SEC. Dodd DID put us behind the 8 ball. Johnson IS currently the best option for our head coach due to many circumstances that Bobby Dodd is partially responsible for. None of that diminishes Dodd's legacy as a coach. It's just a realistic evaluation of our current situation.
