Hindsight is 20-20, as they say. To say the decision to leave the SEC was Dodd's alone is not factual. Regardless, here is what really transpired: Bryant, and some of his cronies were literally signing 100 guys a year and holding "tryouts", and cutting guys. That is why over the years you run into a bunch of guys who claim to have "played for the Bear". Dodd was adamantly against those practices, and he asked the league, and Bryant to stop it....they lied to him about it. Couple that with a number of other factors that Dodd felt further limited Tech's ability to be competitive, and he and Harrison felt they would be better off as an Independent, while still playing their rivals: UGA, Aub, and Tenn.
I think most Tech fans at the time wanted to remain in the SEC, but Dodd felt that the rigors of playing an SEC slate, while not getting a 50/50 break would relegate Tech to Vandy status.
In the years post SEC, Tech went through a bunch of ups and downs, but mostly downs. Would remaining in the SEC been the right thing to do? Once again, that is hard to know. But understand this, NO ONE had a love for, and understood Tech (and it's limitations) more than Dodd. He was truly an on the sidelines genius as a coach, and yes, he got very little help from the BOR and the Administration, and it wore on him.
