Question for real football players with knowledge

No, they hired Willie Fritz and they were really good for a couple of years when he was there. They almost upset us in 2014, won the Sun Belt in their first FBS season. Took the mutts to overtime in 2015 and led them to their first bowl game before leaving to go to Tulane. Then they made a mistake in hiring an assistant from Colorado State who scrapped the option. They had two losing seasons before they got rid of him.
Fritz didn't run CPJ's option.

If we replaced Paul with a non option coach/OC, wouldn’t we suck for 2-3 years due to OL?

@MoverofFridge2

Buzz, in my opinion, no. Teaching new blocking techniques wouldn't be the problem. I think the bigger problem would be getting existing personnel to fit into a new system. I believe there would be growth pains, but that is the case in most coaching changes. we have to get players!

Yes. We will. And I think it will take 2 coaches before we don’t suck again. But that is the reality whether we move on now or five years from now. Might as well lose for a purpose than lose because Paul.

True but my point is that a new hot commodity coach can't just come in and start winning right off the bat. Also see Tom Herman at TX.

Fisher knew what was up when he left.
Texas hasn't been the same since Vince Young went to the NFL. Still, there's no reason why Texas shouldn't consistently be competitive with as many resources as they have.

Jimbo gets Bama next week. :ohpoo:

Texas should have thrown the bank and Gundy.

As I understand it, the boosters at Texas are exceptionally needy and involved in coaching decisions. It sounds like a pretty awful coaching destination.

A lot will depend on what kind of offense the new coach wants to run. If we try to run a pro style/spread offense, I could definitely see us struggle for a couple of seasons until we got some linemen with some size along with a QB that can throw the ball consistently.

There's no guarantee we ever really get that anyway. We should be looking for some sort of offense that doesn't super heavily rely on that, so while there will probably be some effect, what I think we'll want for longer term would hopefully be something that can make it work some anyway.

Something like this would be my top choice for a replacement offense.

On the whole, the offense really hasn’t been the problem. The other two phases of the game and recruiting have been. A new coach will run what he runs and will ultimately recruit to meet his needs. I wouldn’t look at such a decision through the lenses of short term losses. We pretty much suck now.

That said, TStan is in a tough position. From what I understand he personally likes CPJ as a coach. IMHO, before a move is made TStan has to have an answer to the question “how is GT committed to excellence on the football field?” Until he can show the financial, administrative and fan support, it’s going to be a tough sell.

All the people worrying about the 'transition period' to a new scheme or coach... I don't think there's any way to know how good or bad it'll be.

I recall when CPJ was hired, everyone thought our players were completely unsuited to the new scheme, and predicted horrible results. Instead, in 2008-2009 we had our best two year period under him.

So you can argue that our players not being very good will impact the next coach, but obviously that's a completely different argument.

It’s never as good or as bad as it seems.
