Red zone

That’s such a terrible and lazy take. The fade route is great for EJ, he’s 6’7 against 5’10 guys. That’s almost a whole foot of height difference. Sims just needs to get more touch and EJ needs to release better.
The fade route is such a low percentage pass in a goal line situation unless you have some significant advantage like a 6'8 WR on a 5'8 CB or their guy is injured, etc you're better off running a higher percentage play. Even then you've just evened out the odds.

You guys are physically incapable of shutting up about the triple option aren’t you?
Joecake is spot on. And are you too dumb to remember the Fridge ran some option in his package? No one is saying transition to a 3O so we can score in the red zone. But putting some option in for certain situations absolutely could work. And if you oppose simply because you hate 3O as a base O…well you’ve already proven your dumb so never mind.

That's fair but on the other hand we need to stop calling it until those two things happen, because so far it has been a pretty poor play for us. Doesn't matter that you have the right play call if the players can't execute it.
It’s definitely something they should work on in practice. I wouldn’t at all abandon it just because it hasn’t worked a couple of times down there. Both are capable of making that play work.

Which is what we have. Why do you think we threw fades to guys like Calvin, DT, Waller, Smelter, etc.?

If the fade route is just executed properly with a significant height advantage, there is nothing the defense can do to prevent the TD other than commit pass interference and give the offense a first down. It's just a matter of practicing it repeatedly until the timing and throw are right, and then executing it during the game. It's the little things like consistently executing fundamentals that separate good teams from bad teams.

Maybe the problem is calling it the Red Zone? Should we call it the Gold Zone instead?

Get QB outside pocket more with the option to run or pass.

This. Packages to get Simms out of the pocket. From there you can:
- roll out and run the pick play Duke ran against us to either hit the quick out at the pylon or a back corner throw where only one of our bigger receivers can reach it
- put it in Simms hands to get into the end zone in space
- bootleg off of it for a run/pass option the other way - do this off a heavy run look on an early down

I'd be interested to know the success percentage of fades versus other goal-line plays. Do you think it's just a fad that it's so popular? Maybe part of it is that they often draw PIs.

I think part of it is not many college QBs are particularly good at it. I would wager that the success % of that particular play is a lot higher in the NFL than college. idk if that could be said for most plays though.

How about a rocket toss? Sure, we ran in with CPJ, but I don't think there's anything inherently "option-y" about it. Gets a fast player and the ball to the outside quickly where there's some room to run. It was money more often than not.

Calvin didn’t catch every fade thrown to him, but then Clemson happened.

That was one of the first games of his freshman season. And one of the first times that they threw the fade to him. Reggie threw a pretty good fade, so far, Sims has not.

Stop running the fade route.
This. Think we’re like 1-for-8 on the goal line fade after two misses Saturday.

I would keep running the ball or throw quick to the perimeter and let our big WRs block. Duke ran a nifty goal line play at the end of regulation.

The goal line fade has little to do with being taller than the DB. It’s about a quick release, body control, and great hands — and being on the same page as the QB. It is a very low percentage play to anyone not named Calvin Johnson.

And with the ACC refereeing situation you are just as likely to get called for Offensive Pass Interference as you are to get a DPI or TD out of it.
