Reggie Ball: a Tech Man

öööö you!

Reggie is a Tech man in everyway. Everyone on the planet expected him to be Joe Ham 2.0 as soon as he stepped foot on campus and that probably got to him, which was incredibly unfair. He's been ridiculed because of his games against the mutts but if you look back, he was a heck of a competitor and he helped us win some games that we had no business winning during the Gailey years. Thank you, #1.

I travelled out to Provo to see his first game as a Jacket. We lost but beat Auburn the next week. Was more pissed that I couldn't get a cup of coffee the next morning than I was about the game. We opened that season with BYU, Auburn, FSU and Clemson as the first 4 games. I think we played the Noles close too. Lots of promise as a freshman for that young man

Reggie Ball was before my time, but he seems like a real one. GT was still a legit program while he was here, and his supporting cast overall probably wasn't much better than anything we've seen over the last few years. I'd love to see any of the current guys beat Auburn twice in a row or take UGA to the wire every year.

Carter was my little cousin. He was such a tough kid. Reggie was his hero.

I got to see Calvin’s first game when we had a modest 28-7 win over Samford. The Clemson game was the next week. I got to visit with Carter after the Samford game and tell him about this guy we got named Calvin…and how his hero finally had someone amazing to throw to.

It was very fitting the game ended in a miracle.

The fact that Reggie is near the top of so many lists at Tech is testament to the quality of QB he was. He was an intense competitor. Like him or not, he was going to play his heart out every game. In addition, he had to play in the most boring offense imaginable while he was at Tech. He did do some things that were questionable on the field at times, like running out of the EZ against VPI, giving them 2 points and the ball at a critical time. Unfortunately, those are the things we tend to remember. Not the beautiful passes and exciting scrambles. As for UGAg, the only game I drop on him personally was that 2005 game when we drove the length of the field to tie and then, on their 10-yard line, hit the mutt CB right in the numbers with the ball. He won 29 games, though, in a Tech uniform. That should speak loudly enough. What other QB won that many games for Tech? JT5 won 23. Shawn Jones won 31, IIRC, so he may be tops. Joe Ham won 29 as well, IIRC.

I do have an issue with us calling a pass play on 1st and goal against NC State in 2005. Reggie or PJ would have walked the ball in.

The pass play wasn't Reggie's call and he hit Calvin in the hands with it.

That Samford game was my first Tech game ever. I was a freshman in 2004. The win over Clemson the next week was insane. We all ran out of our dorms and swam in the Campanile fountain. I had never heard this story about Reggie until just now.
