Rehash of Braine, Mac, Roof, O'Brien & Gailey

Re: Rehash of Braine, Mac, Roof, O\'Brien & Gailey

Beeware,

Other than the fact that you would like to have seen Mac hired, how was it handled so poorly?? Perfect? No. But how many are? I can't think of a major hire in the past 6 months in college football that was not similar....i.e. Florida, Notre Dame, etc.

As far as decisions being made by a GT AD, here are a couple of decsions that were perhaps the worst in GT football history:

Leaving the SEC (we are still trying to recover)
Hiring Bill lewis

These were made by Coach Dodd and Homer Rice, two legends in Tech history, so not all decisions are golden. Plus, Rice is the one that hired O'Leary with a bogus resume, so how is Braine worse? Please explain with details and facts. Thanks.

Re: Rehash of Braine, Mac, Roof, O\'Brien & Gailey

beeware,

what about the coaching search bothered you? what did Braine do that was so "shameful"? what about a coaching staff that had lost its best piece (Coach Ralph) and taken the program as far as it could is so much head and shoulders above the one Gailey has assembled? Would love to hear your responses to these questions.

GOOD post Ramblin' Buzz! Many great leaders/decision makers have screwed up royally on the job.

Beeware:

I bet Ahso is out looking for worms so he can do more fishing when he returns to his neck of the woods. He will probably name the worms Chan, Dave and George or will he call them Mac, Ted, and Bill. These guys have caught a lot of nice fish.

He started this thread with "rehash" but he probably meant "mishmash".

Dropping the annual Auburn and Tennessee games from our schedule in 1988 ranks up there as one of the worst decisions in GT Football history IMHO. I know that Auburn is on the schedule in 2003, '04 and '05, but then they disappear again. This series should be a permanent season opening game, not an "on and off again" thing IMHO. A guaranteed sellout game ala UGAg/F$U/Clem's son.

Re: Rehash of Braine, Mac, Roof, O\'Brien & Gailey

FH,

I think you are dead on with those comments, but there were a couple of things going on. First, Tech was in the process of lightening the schedule with two Div-IAA teams due to the struggles of the early '80s. Secondly, we were trying to make room for Maryland, who at the time the 1988 and beyond schedules were being made, were winning three straight ACC titles (1983-85).

Beginning in 1992, we were supposed to begin rotating Auburn and Tennessee every two years. The conference expansion in 1991 of the ACC and SEC nixed that idea as Auburn (scheduled for 1992 and 1993) needed the dates for Arkansas in 1992 and we filled Auburn's slot with FSU.

So, there were numerous factors that caused it, but you are right IMHO.

Darn,

I had this thing up to 50 even replies and y'all ruined it by continuing the thread.

To comment on the scheduling thing: I'd personally like to play Auburn every year. If not that, I'd settle for rotating Aub/UT/South Carolina...these are 3 schools where we share borders. If not that, then I'd like to rotate Auburn with a national opponent.

Re: Rehash of Braine, Mac, Roof, O\'Brien & Gailey

Are there plans in the works to put an Auburn/Alabama/UT type of rotation on the schedule? I would love to have a home and home and just simply rotate amongst those three teams as our tough OOC game. Those games would be instant sellouts at the "new" Bobby Dodd and create some good offseason excitement.

As a side question, how come we are not using the Auburn game next year to reopen the stadium? Is it too late or not feasible to play the '04 game in the Dome and play the '03 one at GT?

Re: Rehash of Braine, Mac, Roof, O\'Brien & Gailey

I would love to see a rotation of Alabama/Auburn/Tennessee (maybe one school home & home for two years, then rotating).

I agree that the 2003 Home Opener should be vs Auburn!! We still owe them for the last nine games of the series (9 staright losses), with Auburn holding something like a 47-39-5 lead in the series I think. The 1987 and 1985 home games vs AU still bother me!!

Plus, at the time of the AU-GT series being discontinued, it was the "Oldest Continuious Rivalry in the South". I miss this game greatly!!
