Rawls is a bona-fide moron; his "veil of ignorance" argument is pure socialist garbage.

No doubt...that's exactly what I was saying. However, given the entrenchment of Rawls ideas in the hearts of our current political elites, it helps to be able to make a more sophisticated argument. Hayek, Nozick, and Milton Friedman do that--and unlike some of the books that have been suggested in this thread, these folks are credible thinkers and are viewed as such by even those that disagree with them.

If you have kids in college, it's time to give them these books b/c outside of a few schools, they will not hear much of Nozick, Hayek, or Friedman. To Tech's credit, professors who were very much in line with Rawls introduced me to these thinkers.

I don't know if god exists so I personally can't define him (Odin ? Zeus ?). In the context of my statement yes I meant "Christian God" all old and white haired with a spiffy robe.

Think about a candidate professing belief in Posiedon as his god, owing to him his families success in the fishery business, he'd be laughed off the stage (or perhaps committed). Yet Bush claims he speaks with god. Crazy crazy world we live in.

What i was saying is that the 'Freedom' parties in European countries tend to have similar policies as the Libertarians with concepts such as more local control of govt, small govt, conservative but more in a conservationist sense and not in the raging evangelical sense. it happens to be that in Austria and Germany especially, these parties have also attracted the very right-wing crowd, in part because for example a local community could forbid immigrant to come in if local laws are supreme. just an example.

i do think that in the US, the Libertarians attract some of the more radical conservatives that say, dont believe in the IRS right to tax or whatever. not because the main ideas of the Libs are wacko, just because the platform is more varied and less defined for the younger Libertarian Party than the Reps or Dems

I am a huge fan of the Jews. I like them in part because they are not thin skinned. We are members of the JCC. I really hope I can get the kids into daycare there. I like the irish too because they never complain about irish jokes. People need to stop being so offended. If somebody says something offensive I suggest trying to ignore it. You will be happier.

Fiscal conservatives are screwed. Paul is a good vote for fiscal responsibility, but IIUC he wouldn't have even attacked the Taliban. His foreign policy would make Carter look like Ben Franklin.

Bush burned us conservatives. I'm not sure, since it seems inevitable, that I'm not willing to go Socialist in one fell swoop vs the death of a thousand cuts. Hows that for mixed metaphors.

I have money to invest, but i'm not sure it's not time to start hiding it from the Socialists.

Not Irish, but have to argue with you on one point. The irish monks arguably saved western civilization with the fall of the Roman Empire (and there is a pretty decent book about it, as well.)
