Winklejohn not doing any favors by calling our recruits about the crap from CBS...he is now going so far as to say in his article that DRad is not being supportive calling him "middle of the road" and "diplomatic".

He talked to three so far...

AJ Jenkins said the report did make him sit down and discuss with his parents re-opening his commitment again.

Jon Lockart said it would not matter but he may ask about it.

Running back Richard Watson said, "It would affect me [if Gailey was fired], but I hadn't even heard about it until now," said Tallahassee running back Richard Watson, who committed to Tech last summer. "He's been there so long [six years], doing so well [record of 42-30, a bowl game every season], I can't see why he would be fired."

Now...because of this bullcrap...instead of recruiting positively....Giff and gang are having to going into spin control mode to try and settle the kids we aleady have down and to get these last big name recruits to not factor this story in their decision.

Guys...I have said it before and I will say it again...what we say in public does matter and we should be as united as possible and keep certain discussions directly with the coaching staff and athletic admiinstration (they are all very open). If you just just spout off your opinions in a negative manner...at least fairly wait until after the season. Regardless of what ultimately happens with any coaching situation (with any sport)...all of us should agree that we need to lock in great recruits.

...and recruiting has become a highly public and information bit filled process these days.

Let me see if I get this right.....CCG can go and interview in a very public manner....and may do so at the end of this year again given the number of pro jobs that will be open....and don't give me the "special situation" crap about last year....he was after more money (no problem with that) and even said later you'd be crazy not to listen for the money that pro teams offer (also agree with that), but we can't speak our opinion of the coach for fear of hurting recruiting?

There is no football coach in the BCS conferences that is more than two mediocre or losing seasons away from losing his job and if any recruit thinks differently they are living in a dream world. So AJ Jenkins saying he wanted to go somewhere where the coach wouldn't be fired or leave needs to know there is no such place. And BTW, if he goes to FL, and Urban wins another MNC, Tebow goes to the pros after junior year.....Urban may try the pro thing as well and all of a sudden AJ is dealing with a new coach.

Coaches are like the rest of us, they are looking for a better deal and have no loyalty. Neither do the schools that employ them.

Watch how nice TN treats one of their own if Fulmer loses a couple of more games this year. If you were a recruit last February, and you picked TN because you knew the coach would be there for 4 years, guess you could be in a world of hurt.

Kids should pick schools because of the school and what opportunities they see for themselves within the program...period. If they like the coach...that's a plus, but if someone is basing their decision on that and what they read by some uninformed supporter on the Internet, they deserve what they get.

And BTW, just a couple of weeks after CCG looking for a job...every recruit signed....not one left last year.

This is just simply a case of a reporter looking for a story and the kids supplying what he wanted to hear.

We want more Richard and so should you! :pat:

Now, if the young tailback's comment could have included "and has beaten uga the last two years", he would have a better point.

On the other hand, he could have truthfully said..."He's been there so long [six years] and has never beaten uga...".

It's pretty simple. If Chan Gailey is the coach next year, this will be the best November for Tech football in a very long time!

agreed, this is about GT not any individual player. as Oleary said we will win with you or without you. Gt will be here long after this so called head coach is gone.

I find it amazing y'all's reaction. With all the impediments that Tech football has to overcome in recruiting, y'all just keep adding more.

I wonder how many "fans" actually are posting to fire Chan? 100 maybe?

Keep busting away at our program guys, you're doing a good job.

The fact that Lockhart and Watson didn't even know about this puts a damper on the whole "recruits read message boards" argument.

Hiveredtech - I appreciate your info and opinions but I think you're offbase with the target of your anger. The problem here is Dodd's article, not Winklejohn's story. I think Dodd's article is unsubstantiated (at best) and as a fan I am interested in how it affects recruiting. That is what Winklejohn is attempting to determine by asking the recruits. As I said before, ignoring it doesn't make it go away - and I would rather our staff address it with the recruits before other coaches sneak in and drop Dodd's blog in the recruits' laps.

Clearly DRad needs to complain vocally to the NCAA about potential recruiting violations. If Winklejohn is a UGAgrad then he shouldn't be calling and potentially influencing recruits under the veil of journalism.

Let's trace the source of the problem. Dodd said that Gailey told one of his assistants that he was gone at the end of the season. Note Dodd did not get this information from a GT messageboard. Either Dodd's source is an opposing coach that is lying to intentially hurt our recruiting which is going to happen regardless of what gets posted on this board OR Dodd's source is telling the truth and the ultimate source of the problem is Gailey for basically telling his staff to start looking for new jobs mid-season. Even if every post here spoke glowingly of Gailey, Dodd could have written his article and it would have had the same impact. I'm willing to bet if you go to over half the college messageboards out there that you will find comments just like the ones here so this is not about what a bunch faceless fonts post on a messageboard. Also note that none of the recruits were aware that Gailey might be in trouble until Winklejohn started dropping the Dodd article in front of them so clearly they are not reading the messageboards.

I would hope the recruits don't read message boards. They weren't around when I was that age but I'd like to hope I would have had something better to do back then. I didn't start reading message boards until I got old and boring/bored. If I was a young high school football stud I'd be making the most of my time as a hero because a lot of them don't make the cut and continue to be heroes at the next level.

Guya...I have said it before and I will say it again...what we say in public does matter ......

And what about what ccg say? Does it matter?

Gailey to recruits: Don't expect me to be here.

Georgia Tech head coach Chan Gailey is a straight-shooter when it comes to his future with the Yellow Jackets.

“All of that comes up, and I tell them that, in this day and age, nothing is guaranteed,” Gailey, 55, said without hesitation behind his meticulously organized desk. Outside the window in his office, you can see the whole field at Bobby Dodd Stadium. That’s where Gailey may or may not be in 2010, when his Tech contract is slated to expire.
Added Gailey, “I tell [recruits and their parents] straight up that, if there is somebody out there next year [in the NFL] that offers me an exorbitant amount of money and it’s a good owner and good people, I’m going to talk to them. That doesn’t mean I’m going, but I’m probably going to talk to them. “I’ve got a great job, and I love it here, and I’d love to retire here. That’s what I’d like to do, but you can’t say ‘never’ in this business.”
Is it ok for ccg to talk to recruits about leaving us? And not ok for someone to talk about us leaving him?

After the length of time he has been here, any problem ccg may have with the possible length of his remaining stay here is of his own making.

Guya...I have said it before and I will say it again...what we say in public does matter ......

Please help me here, I don't know how in the Hell you reached this conclusion from this series of events.

First - Dodd publishes his piece that Gailey has told one of his assistants that we will be fired. Did this have anything to do with message boards?? obviously No.

2nd - Wilkeljon calls recruits and asked them what they think. Did this have anything to do with message boards? NO.

Please tell me how, other than your desire to see it, is there a connection between this series of events and message boards?

I am very much in agreement with this. I seriously doubt that a kid will go on recruiting trips --get a feel for the school where he sees opportunity and an all-around good fit based upon various factors --academics, location, potential to play, etc. --and then after several months of going through the recruiting/decision process and coming to a decision --change his mind because of what he might read on an Internet message board.

The kids that will only come to Tech because of Chan Gailey will most likeley be disappointed either sooner or later.
Some if he leaves, and some if he stays.

I have gotten so tired of hearing which recruits we will lose if/when he is fired/quits.
It's like our football program has a toothache. We know it should be pulled, but are afraid it will bleed for 20 minutes.

The fact that Lockhart and Watson didn't even know about this puts a damper on the whole "recruits read message boards" argument.

Some do some don't. I remeber AJ Smith posted on the hive the day he committed. Some of the parents post on the insider board. Bottom line, it's no big secret to anyone that the staff is feeling the heat. Just because some recruits know and some don't doesn't really matter. The coaches are in contact with them on a regular basis.

this is rediculous!!! Why is everyone so DAMN negative towards CCG and co? DAMNIT!!!!

Very much agreed.

Makes you go hmmm.

What's to keep a frustrated (bitter) insider from calling Dodd and giving him the scoop (make it up) and then coming to a message board so he could substantiate it? Then he pushes his views hard enough so that a local sportswriter jumps on the story. I really think we'd all do better if we just ignored this junk.

It is obvious that Winklejohn DOES read message boards......and is more than willing to pass along anything NEGATIVE that he discovers.
