Roquan smith to UCLA #mutthurt

Good for him.

I agree. The kids should have protection. Let me be clear, I am solidly in the camp that a kid should sign with a SCHOOL and not a COACH, but the fact of the matter is they are 17 and 18yo kids and relationships are important. They are leaving mom and dad for the first time, and if they find a mentor type in the guy who is recruiting them, they are going to latch on to that.

Under the way it's traditionally been done, the school has all the leverage. I applaud this kid for what he's doing, and I think it also underscores a very important thing for future recruits in that you have to have broad reasoning for picking a school and not just focus on the jimmys and joes.

The LOI situation is a mess. The way I would do it is allow the team to offer a 1, 2, 3, or 4 year contract. When that contract is signed, the player is committed to that school for the time period, but the school is also committed to provide a scholarship (barring discipline action or poor academics) for the time period. A player can transfer to any other school after his contract expires and a team is allowed to not offer a scholarship after the contract expires (of course, the contract could be renewed).

Hopefully less LOIs signed = less stupid hat shows. A guy can dream.

Hat shows usually are for verbal commitments. If anything, this will make recruiting last all the way until Summer enrollment.

Sweet! So I'll look forward to ESPNU's "Breaking Hat Announcement" at 2p on a Thursday in April.

Well a lot of these colleges don't care about these kids getting degrees.

I.B.,
You are letterman. Did you have a strong perception that Georgia Tech (the administration and the coaching staff) cared that you got your degree? By that I mean were they interested in you being successful in class for what that would mean to you. Or were they just wanting you to succeed in class as a means to keeping you eligible to play? I was not an athlete, but I never felt that Ma Tech cared whether I lived or died. :naughty:

I think all players ought to be committed to Alabama by default until Alabama decides if they want the player or not.

That sploosh sound you just heard was the collective creaming of every recruiting sites' owners' pants.

Agreed. There was not "caring" or "mercy" to be found for the regular student. You either survived or left. I am hoping that we will find out that, because of their necessity to our fb program, the athletes are treated like their degree is necessary and expected.

As it should be ... easy stuff !

The kid is going to UGA. He won't be the magical trendsetter that revolutionizes recruiting as Carvell thinks he will.

Hopefully he will bring with him that can do attitude Isaiah Crowell and many others like him had.

Just imagine if Brad Stewart did this. Carvell would have hourly updates on the kid.

Why this kid is even still considering UCLA after they tried to pull the rope-a-dope on him is beyond me.
