Running Backs

What has happened to our running backs?

Is Smith hurt?

Is Cooley dealing with an injury or just playing timid now for some reason?

Haynes has been impressive but he seems to be the only one producing and he can't carry the whole load the rest of the year.

Looks like we need some depth there and would be nice to get a big bruiser for short yardage situations.
We don’t have a bruiser back like you said. And yes dealing with injuries

We 100% could have run the clock out if he fell at the 1 yard line. They had 1 timeout left and we would have taken the next snap with ~50 seconds on the clock.

That said I was fine with him cashing the TD.

Hmm, I stand corrected. We could have killed the clock.

I was surprised to see Cooley playing as much as he did in the first half. Maybe they were saving Jamal.
I just think we are kind of thin there right now. If Smith is truly injured, we need him back.

Dontae was dressed and he warned up at Wake but he must still be dinged up and they decided to give him another week.

I haven't been keeping up with injuries (so maybe that was also a factor in the first couple games), but I will say that I'm still kind of waiting to see the Dontae of the last few years. He always felt like one of those sneaky good players (played second fiddle to Gibbs, but put up some really nice runs still). He hasn't really been able to get much going this year.

I'll also echo what the other poster said about wonder where Felix is.

All of that said, I think Haynes is the man.

Hate to say it but Cooley is close to the worst RB I've ever seen at Tech. He has terrible vision seemingly running toward defenders and has very little tackle breaking ability. He has ZERO elusiveness. He couldn't avoid running straight into a parked car in an empty parking lot.

He's also pretty slow and never beats anyone to the edge. Tech has almost always had good running backs. Having zero rushing attack nearly killed us against Wake and will almost certainly be a big problem the rest of the season.

And also the play calling was terrible last night.

Cooley had an off game. His total numbers against Wake, UL, and Ole Miss stack up fine with our running backs.

Smith was not dressed against Ole Miss (he was there). Maybe he was dressed at Wake for emergency only. Just a guess.

We need to give Jamal a little rest this week so hope Smith can play and get into game shape.

He is certain to get more touches with the apparent lack of depth we have at RB so we will see if there is improvement. I would love to see it for him and for Tech but this isn't a one game observation for me. I've noticed it multiple times over more than one game. I think he runs hard and plays hard, but it's difficult to teach field vision, elusiveness, tackle breaking and speed.

Really good running backs historically has been something I've taken for granted at Tech. We've pretty much had really good ones as far as I can remember and sometimes great running backs. Not this year from what I've seen so far. Hope it changes.

Haynes is the best we've got right now by far. But he is on the small side and he's gonna get injured if he has to carry the bulk of the load.

I prefer Jamal get to rest for all of the second half and that Smith gets one more week to heal, unless he is 100%. We need everyone for Miami

How is Lane recovering?

I don’t think CBK puts up with fumbling the football and that might be why we haven’t seen Felix. If I remember correctly from last year he has a tendency to drop the ball if hit pretty hard. He is a talented back but you’ve got to hold on to the ball.

My guess Key runs a tighter rotation than Collins. He believes in playing your best and making sure the top 2 get most of the practice reps. Collins tried to have 4 deep ready to play and players were not sharp.

Can you imagine this offense with a Dwyer (sophomore season) at running back? We would be feared.

or Synjyn Days or Zach Laskey. I think Zach was 6’3” and 220+. They were brushing ‘B’ backs for CPJ
