What you did there. I seent it.Hiring a coach is always high risk even with a large sample size. The key is not to have larger guaranteed buyouts than you can afford to to pay off.

Oh yes let's base this hire off a coach who coached at North Greenville, Delta State, Charleston Southern, and Coastal Carolina. You’re not convinced that every single program Jamey had touched has seen a complete 180? Only program that didn’t turn it around was a school he was at for one year. Key couldn’t get easy wins against UVA and FSU, and especially against Miami. Why did it take him this long to play Taison and Pyron?
Almost every power 5 coach has had their roots at smaller schools. That’s such a piss poor excuse. He’s beat multiple top 25 teams at Coastal and made Charleston Southern a perennial powerhouse. And good for Zach. Do you remember all the twitter posts after Geoff got fired? He had more praise from the team. I guess we should’ve kept him.Oh yes let's base this hire off a coach who coached at North Greenville, Delta State, Charleston Southern, and Coastal Carolina.
first understand that no coach will come in here and win 9 + games next year.
And as for Pyron you may want to know how he feels.

Love you coach! Appreciate you going to war for us everyday! This is the man to lead Georgia Tech in the future!

True, but similarly, if you changed a few plays in other losses, it could have went another way too. Despite the final scores, some of the games were within reach.Something to consider: If Josh Downs catches that pass and we lose by 3, would people be talking about Key for next HC?

Every hire is risky...
Key is lower risk in the contract department for sure, but the other question is the risk on the field and, consequently, in the stands. We can survive a Key buyout but it will be harder to survive 3ish more years of struggling to make a bowl and 25k attendance. And yes, Key is absolutely a higher risk in performance than some of the other coaches that have been discussed; he has so many unknowns. Can he put a decent staff together? Can he recruit well for a whole team and not just offensive line, especially defense? Can he manage a roster well?Exactly. Hiring Key will be a lower “risk” option than bringing in a coach from outside. Key has no leverage to speak of. We will have to give any other coach a large golden parachute to entice them to join.
The decision is a no brainer. Give Key a shot, and if it doesn’t work out we can move on with minimal financial impact.

Obviously if the other coaches we talk to demand huge salaries and cushy contracts to come here, we probably have to say no and Key is a good option if we can't get our top choices. The only way it's a no-brainer (to me, meaning straight to Key and not shop around) is if you don't want to use your brain to pick the hire.
I honestly don’t see what the hate with Jamey is. Anyone saying he’s a Paul Johnson QB is missing a couple things. 1) Johnson was a HELL of a coach who had high attendance when he was here. 2) Jamey’s scheme is completely different from Johnson. Yes there are option elements, but that’s every single offense. Bama, UGAg, Tennessee, Ohio State, etc. all run spread option plays, which is what Jamey runs. 3) Jamey is young and confident. If Angel and J give him the keys to success like they say they want to do, there is little to no doubt that he will succeed, especially if he keeps Thacker at DC.I get your point for sure. But what coach can we hire that will put the butts back in the seats from Day 1? Chadwell has mixed reactions. Deion would bring the excitement for sure.
Otherwise, I know our fanbase, and they are going to be “wait and see” for sure.
Ouch. Now that’s a stat.We also got blown out at home by a Miami team that couldn’t get 100 yds to Clemson and lost by 42 at home to FSU.
this was a great win, but is that enough to make Key the best coach available for us?
I’m not anti Key, I think he’d be a fine HC, but I want us to be competitive with the best teams in the country. Not sitting at 8-9 wins a season.
Whoever the coach is will have more butts in the seat. Collins was cancer.I get your point for sure. But what coach can we hire that will put the butts back in the seats from Day 1? Chadwell has mixed reactions. Deion would bring the excitement for sure.

Chadwell may have a higher ceiling than Key.I'd be happy with Chadwell but "I think he'd only win 8-9 games a season and I don't want that" is an awful reason to not hire a coach for a team that only won nine games total under their last coach.
I would give my left nut to start sitting at 8-9 wins a season for a while.
So you’re proving my point. We’ve had such a trash coach, that we’re complacent with decent. We have an opportunity to be GREAT. If we just wanna be decent, I know a Chan Gailey who would be more than happy to coach us again.I would give my left nut to start sitting at 8-9 wins a season for a while.

Probably almost no coach with get them back to the stands day 1, but it's not the coach that will bring them back. it's winning games. And Key is a greater risk of not winning than some other options, which isn't saying it's because he is bad but because we aren't as certain he will be good, if the gist of that comes across.I get your point for sure. But that’s the thing, I’m sick of us being UGAgs and Clemsons doormat every year. We win 8 games a year, congrats, we’re going to the Music City Bowl, the Sun Bowl, etc. every year. I want us to BEAT UGAg, BEAT Clemson, win ACC Championships, be consistently in the top 10-15 every year. I don’t want us to have Chan Gailey pt. 2.8.5 wins per season consistently is great. Better than great, it's elite. It would be #9 in the country based on winning percentage over the past ten years.
I see what you're saying about Chadwell having the higher ceiling and understand preferring him over Key, but if you really think consistently winning 8-9 games a season is only decent your expectations are out of touch with reality.
