Self Fulfilling Prophecy

Are you saying you're settling for 500 yards on the ground?

Sounds like you're settling for mediocrity to me.

I remember Kerry Watkins being very highly recruited.

Anyway, how many highly performing receivers has Tech had in the NFL up to this point? How many QB's?

Nesbitt was heavily recruited--as a safety. GT offered him a chance to compete for the QB job. Win-win for us--he's either a QB or if that would not have worked out, a top flight safety, regardless, we get the great athlete.

CPJ has said that he lets players try whatever position they want and if it's not working out then they'll talk about where they might be able to help the team more and get PT.

"PJ's offenses don't throw the ball"... It seems that this statement has caused good wide receivers to avoid Tech which in itself makes us throw the ball less. Without a couple of good wide outs, guys that can catch and break away, we certainly will not throw the ball often. But if we can't throw the ball often enough to attract wide outs, then we won't get the players needed.

Our offense is still so young and really throwing the ball is still an unknown. It is frustrating to see however that our future passing game may be predetermined by a lack of star power at the WR spot.
No offense midatl, but you really do seem to have a negative view of most things. Who says we won't get good WRs? Who says we won't pass the ball? It seems to me you're worried about things that you assume will happen. Just enjoy the resurgence and let's see what happens. Personally I'm not worried about PJ getting the players he needs.

That's the greatest thing we have going for us.

What we need to express to incoming or recruiting WR's is the climate has changed in the NFL regarding WR's. Only your prima dona's aren't that much into blocking and they are very few. TO as much as I loathe him has started to block for the cowboys.

If I were a receiver I would relish the chance not only because I have the opportunity to have a day like BeBe but also I know if I want to get to the next level I will have too block. I would rather learn it now than wait until the next level.

I played on one of the first teams that every WR blocked and more times than not had game breaking blocks that helped us be successful.

Who can do that? Do we need alumni with NFL experience to step in and aid that? Is that even legal in NCAA rules?

Think they'd listen to a lineman's opinion?

I'm just asking.

Believe me the recruiting guys are telling our kids that. We have direct lines with a lot of NFL guys out there who believe Paul's system. I know that first hand.

No offense meant at all, but couldn't we point to a Ugagger for a great demonstration of this. Everyone always talks about Hines Ward, and his blocking--and why everyone in Pittsburgh loves him for that.

I would think that after Saturday, BeBe will do just fine telling WR's they can have a future with this offense. And, after his Junior or Senior year when he heads to the NFL with Mel Kiper gushing about what a great blocker he is, that will only help further.

now granted, I have been a Steeler's fan since I have been watching football, but I think Hines Ward is the ultimate team player in sports

not only does he walk the walk and make game- breaking plays, but he does whatever it is the team needs - with poise and grace. that includes blocking

i think he brings incredible credibility (oxymoron?) to his leadership because of his actions on and off the field

Hines Ward is a punk. He blocks late very well indeed and then laughs about how he almost ended your career with a knee injury. He's a funny guy.

Ah, my old nemesis, NC.

Actually you can take the post that way, but I was just reading up on some things. Yes, we have lost major players, recruits and past verbal commitments because of our offense's reputation of not throwing the ball.

As I said, I want it all. In the 90's FSU beats us half those games simply because they threw the ball high to tall athletic receivers. We'd outplay them, they'd just toss it up. And we couldn't do much to defend it. (and now UGA is getting the same guys)

Against Duke, DT did the same thing a few times. Certainly PJ has shown some throwing in his past offenses, but his WR's are often ex QB's and RB's (smaller players). I believe that if PJ got a good running and throwing QB and he had plenty of DT's around, he'd throw it even more.

I just am hoping that we can get ahead of the curve and get some more of those tall athletic guys in the mold of CJ, Dez White and DT. It really adds to the offense IMO.

My original post was lamenting how much fun it is to have a DT in our offense right now. But realistically, those guys do not often drop into PJ's hands. Here's hoping that the advantages offered by PJ will attract those kids, but generally I think most are going to be looking at USC, OU, UGA, TT, UT, UM, UM, FSU, etc. first.

I'm not knocking our program, I want it all.

whatever, i no longer respect your opinion. Ward is great, and if you can name me one guy that was a team player that the OTHER team liked, i'd like to see it.

I have noticed that he also thinks it's hilarious when he drops a sure TD pass. Maybe loss of intensity is natural in guys who played under both Coach Goff and Coach Donnan.

dumb post of the day, but hey i'm getting used to that with you. you are in Kyle territory soon

the guy makes more clutch plays than AAMCO

You no longer respect my opinion because I don't agree with you on Hines Ward, a dog no less? That's pretty funny.

Regarding team players that others like, how about Peyton Manning, or since you're a Steeler fan Rod Woodson, or Ray Lewis garners a lot of respect INSIDE the NFL. How about Keith Brooking, he's not a punk is he? How about Huey Long or John Davis? Jim Kelly was a pretty respected team player. I could name a thousand that fits your desired description.

respect is a long way from like. Noone likes to play against Ray Lewis, he knocks the **** out of you. i doubt that the opposing CBs like seeing Peyton drop back when they are in man coverage. I think you are not catching the difference between respect and like

and i bet in a vote of NFL players, Hines would be well liked and well respected, but no one likes to play against him

Hines Ward is quite unpopular with other NFL players and has been labled a "cheap shot artist" by many of them. The last SI poll of NFL players had him getting the 6th most votes for "dirtiest player" in the league.

He plays hard, and he's a very good player and I can see why Steelers fan love him, but he's a dirty player. In many ways he's like Rodney Harrison - great leader and team player, and very unpopular with the rest of the league for his play.
