Apparently Coach Perkins had a throwback moment to the days of his youth when Frank Thomas, Wallace Wade and JB "Ears" Whitworth had the Tide in those white helmets with crimson trim. As far as I have been able to research, Bear Bryant put the Tide in the storied crimson helmets with matching jerseys and white pants and they have been that way ever since. I saw a team picture from 1960 and they were wearing the crimson helmets. Actually, upon review, Frank Thomas who coached the 1934 national champions and Wallace Wade predated Perkins' youth which was probably in the early and mid 1950s just before Bear came home.
