Should Clemson be an "official" rival?

I dont know the head to head records but I feel like Clemson should be a legitimate rival for us (i.e. have a nickname for the game, play it up, etc.)

IMO, both teams are very similar. Similar talent, similar seasons, and it seems like we alternate winning every year. (at least recently)

When I turn on NCAA 08 it only lists UGA as a "rival game" which is true.

What do you guys think?

Don't we play Clem(P)son every year as our main "cross division" rival in the ACC?

Uh, Clemson is a rival. As far as "nicknames" go, it's called the Tech-Clemson/Climpsun game.

If not mistaken, I'm pretty sure we have been playing each other even longer than PlayStation has.

Clemson is a HUGE rival we have played them a lot....we've played UGA, Au, duke, then Clemson I believe the most in that order...Go to a game there and you will find out how big it is. I was there during the flood game a few years ago, thought we were going to have to fight to get out alive. 2 guys in orange overalls asked for a jump off b/c their battery was dead, I declined. For me the hate factor is neck and neck with the mutts-

sorry, man, but for me that is totally weak

every time i have been to a clemson game in SC, i have been treated with the utmost friendliness and graciousness

after we beat them IN THEIR YARD in the last seconds of the game, they invited us to their food and drink and were extremely classy

wish you could have shown the same dignity...

this came after 4 or 5 of them throwing their dip spit that they collected all game in cups, when the rain let up...next time I head up there I will get seats where you sit. weak, hardly-

I didn't use my experience to blast everyone at CU, that day was an awful day...some folks have good experiences, some have bad, there is like 80,000 or close, people...maybe I should have done the right thing, but to go after someone and not even know what happened is well,...

We have played 71 games against the CU Tigers with them being our fourth most frequent opponent behind UGA, Auburn, and Duke.

We dominate them 45-24-2 in the series.

The statistics speak for themselves, this definitely is a rivalry game. In fact I really think it is the best rivalry in the ACC (if not one of the best in the entire south) as it is both relevant (due to the last decade of close games) and historical. Some may argue UM-FSU for best ACC rivalry, but that game does not carry the history that GT-CU does.

I was glad to see that the ACC didn't screw up and axe the CU-GT game as an annual event despite both teams landing in different divisions post-expansion. This is my absolute favorite game of the year because it is usually a brawl, the teams are located within spitting distance of each other, and both teams travel well to the away team stadiums. Makes for a fun Saturday in the fall.

As much as I would appreciate GT-CU being the greatest ACC rival, I'm going to have to say that UM-FSU far outweighs that. This was already a storied in-state rivalry between 2 perennial powerhouses that often came down to close finishes (missed field goals, etc.). And then UM joined the ACC to also make it an intra-conference rivalry. Unfortunately, I don't believe that GT-CU compares to UM-FSU. And yes, I expect bashing for this opinion

totally agree..that game is one that I always get jacked up for. It was a no brainer that we would be cross conference rivals.

I see what you all are saying and I agree. But I still dont think the college football world thinks of both schools as rivals. I dont think it would hurt to trump the game up a little bit. Especially since we play them every year... that's what prompted me to make the thread.

This thread is totally off course.

Of course they should be an 'official' rival, if the criteria is having a cool name for the game. Like Battle for the Oaken Bucket or something equally silly to put on TV. The major problem is, nobody's come up with a really cool name yet, and nobody's come up with a ****ty story to have the announcers say once per year, and nobody's propagated that ****ty story through the fanbases of both schools until they believe it enough for it to become an "official rival."

Which comes down to us. We, as dutiful students of Tech Football, should come up with a cool name and a ****ty network TV story explaining the cool name, and propagate it.

Go.

I suggest the War of the Broken Oar, which alludes to a notorious 1920s drunken bet between a GT fraternity and a Clemson fraternity, over who could row a boat across Lake Assmuch or whatever lake Clemson is on, about who could row a boat across with a treebranch the fastest. Insert allusion about how Ag students row faster, and engineering students row smarter, end with natural rival result, package for ABC announcers. Add a dash of moonshine / prohibition avoidance and we've got a winner.

Your turn.

That's just wrong. That's just a matter of common civility. Plus, you missed an opportunity to passively inform them that it was those gawd-awful urnge suits that drained their battry in the first place!:laugher::laugher:

How about the Battle for the Haggard Sow. We win, we get Clem(P)son's best cow/sexual partner. They win, they get one of female CS majors from the depths of the States cluster.

Perfect!

Now I feel justified for every time I have gone to the hardware store to replace a door or toilet seat when we have lost to the trailer trash.
It would have been immature to break things if they weren't a meaninful rival.

You should come up with a similarly quaint fable for each home opponent. Nary a seat could be had! :laugher:

Great post.

Another quality post by Allen.

Once we get the legend worked out, we need to start sneaking it onto wikipedia the week before the game, every year. That's likely all it would take to get it mentioned on air, which is all we need to make it a tradition.

I am not exactly sure, but isn't this the game we pulled out the sledge hammer for? If so we should start playing for the hammer every year.

Shouldn't there be some sort of incentive to win?

Before the divisional split, there was no doubt that Clemso...(I remember now) n, was a big rival game for us. Today that stupid split has weakened the interest just a bit. The VPI, UVA and Miami are just plain bigger games now.

Go to south and north divisions.
