Should Clemson be an "official" rival?

Shouldn't there be some sort of incentive to win?

Well, taking Clem(P)son's favorite carnal midnight delight away would be pretty good, as they'd probably cry. Plus, even if we lose, we win, by making the computer science department smell better.

Go to south and north divisions.

...and put Miami in the north division. They're all Yankees down there anyways, and the whole "Move to Florida" thing fits the northern media market.

You have some serious issues with the CoC my friend. Go ahead, Allen, just let it all out

I took the last semester of CS2130 before it was discontinued.

Seriously though, is the states cluster still there? I haven't been down in the dungeon since I got out. That place smelled like the inside of an Indian's gymsock. You know the police tear gas training? Imagine that, only while coding compilers. That was CS2130. So yea, I have issues.

Its a pretty sad place to be, to this day. Even more saddening is to know how these classes stuck with you. I hope I do not fall under the same tragedy

North and South and call the game "The Genteel Southern Brawl".

North: BC, Miami, MD, UVA, VPI, Wake
South: FSU, GT, Clemson, UNC, NCS, Duke

Intrasquad rivals:
Miami-FSU
Duke-Wake
Clem-VPI
UNC-UVA
NCS-MD
BC-GT

(or maybe not. The whole Miami thing in the north screws it up I think.)

I'd consider Duke and UNC another rivalry in the ACC, and they don't have a catchy name. Although, I'd like to formally nominate "The Pillowfight" as the official name.

I dont know the head to head records but I feel like Clemson should be a legitimate rival for us (i.e. have a nickname for the game, play it up, etc.)

I don't know the exact cultural dynamic that elevates two teams to rival status, but we certainly can't "decide" that Clemson or anyone will be a rival. There has to be a widespread emotional burn, a lot of baggage that you don't have to explain to people. It's there, everyone can feel it, and thus, everyone knows when we've got a rivalry on our hands.

Before the divisional split, there was no doubt that Clemso...(I remember now) n, was a big rival game for us. Today that stupid split has weakened the interest just a bit. The VPI, UVA and Miami are just plain bigger games now.

Go to south and north divisions.
Yeah, UGA used to be a much bigger rival for us back before the SEC departure. Today that stupid split has weakened the interest just a bit. The Maryland and Duke are just plain bigger games now.

A couple of our boosters just paid millions of dollars to make Chan go away because he couldn't beat UGA. He beat just about every other team he played, but he got the pink slip because he couldn't beat Richt. If that doesn't tell you that we care more about UGA then anyone else, I don't know how else to put it.

Besides...Duke? DUKE?! The only team that would get excited for beating the Blue Devils is St. Mary's School for the Blind and Deaf, and even they would only be 3.5 point underdogs.

Nah, you got it all wrong. That UGA loss streak had nothing to do with it. It's a meaningless nonconference game. If you'll recall, Chan lost to those 3.5 point underdogs to St. Mary's School for the Blind and Deaf. That was nail number one in the coffin. And the final straw was letting a MD team with their eighth string QB torch us this year. Those teams GET UP for our big rivalries in the mighty ACC. The Georgia game hasn't meant **** in 5 decades.

I would consider Clemson to be a bigger rival than (u)ga. (u)ga is our in-state rival, meaning they are our rival by default. They are as much a rival as Florida & Miami, but more like Florida & F$U.

Clemson is our rival by happenstance. Auburn would be our rival if we played them more frequently in all sports. We play Clemson frequently in all sports. Not only that, but the outcomes of the games are very balanced. I love the Tech/Clemson games because you never know who is going to win. Once the game is over, the winner feels fulfilled and the loser feels the pain.

Take baseball, for instance. Tech & Clemson are perennial powers and equals. We compete for the same recruits, ACC titles, and tickets to Omaha. We are typically hosting super-regionals. We are almost mirror images except for their hideous colors and their (u)ga-like fan-base. Did anyone here know that our baseball rivalry is really close to 50/50 all time?

As far as academics go, they don't really compete, but they do have architecture and engineering schools, unlike (u)ga.

You must have joined late.

The "UGA doesn't matter" crowd is not coincidentally highly correlated with the "we shouldn't fire Chan" crowd. They don't accept the association and don't understand why UGA still matters to the majority of Tech fans.

Chan himself used to say thsat UGA mattered. So when he started to speak of it as "just as important as any other game" after never beating them it smacked of sour grapes.

Tech cannot achieve success in football until UGA matters to us and to them. I will leave it to others to complete the syllogism.

Oh jeebus cripes, I swear all sense of sarcasm is lost on you engineer types.

Sarcasm is a literary device. When is the last time you saw anything more then technical writing on the engineering curriculum? We're not STAC majors here.

And honestly, I would say that the UGA/Tech game is very important. Look at the number of 'Go Dawgs' posts on the one positive article the AJC writes about Tech a month. Look at the number of UGA fans reveling in the Chan Gailey era. We've been losing and they've been gloating. If they didn't care, they wouldn't say anything at all.

Agreed, rivalrys invoke emotion among fans/players. This is the one ACC game each year that I HATE losing regardless of each teams records. I am a native Georgian and so I might have a different opinion than you out-of-towners, but if we lose to Maryland, BC or UVA it sucks ass, but it doesn't affect me emotionally because I will not see any of those teams bumper-stickers on cars here in GA. In other words, if CU and GT are both winless going into that game, I still desperately want to win because CU fans live around me and I know several personally. If we are winless and Maryland is also winless going into that game I will pull my hardest for Tech, but if we lose, my emotions won't be affected very much. For instance the AU games were HUGE from a rivalry standpoint (even though the game hadn't been played in over a decade). I think the majority of Tech people know at least one AU fan so it became personal.

so true.. it is what it is b/c they are so close, meaning CU, AU and of course UGA. plus those 3 think they invented football as we know it.

IMO, both teams are very similar. Similar talent, similar seasons, and it seems like we alternate winning every year. (at least recently)

When I turn on NCAA 08 it only lists UGA as a "rival game" which is true.

What do you guys think?

Of course they should be a legitiment rival of ours. Any fool that screws a helmet down on his head and runs out on the field to compete against GT is a pure and simple RIVAL.
They will never equal the rival between GT and the hydrant heisters, but they are still a rival.

I harbor no ill will towards Clemson at all. It's just another game to me, and I lived in SC for 13 years.

Clemson, IMO, is how rivalry games should be - they're important, they generate bragging rights, they're with a nearby school, the games are close, exciting, and you never know who's going to win. And when it's done, the fans don't hate each other.

Athens should be sub-tac-nuked and any survivors should be shot.
