Smaller class for Georgia Tech, Geoff Collins

We signed a small class for a few reasons. One of the biggest is because we are looking to be very active with transfers. We need immediate contribution because we suck.

And the second reason is because a few guys spurned us. A few others didn't meet their end of the bargain. And a few others were jettisoned in favor of (hopefully) incoming transfers.

The first reason is that we had misses due to uncertainty over the staff.

The portal doesn’t really give you a lot of contributor ready guys. They are generally backups which would probably be better spent on HS guys. The exception is guys in the portal with lots of eligibility left.

Can you do a side by side comparing to overall ACC averages?
13-22 avg ranking.png

Here is GT compared to every other ACC team with averages. At the bottom I also split the averages by 19-22 (CGC) and 13-18 (CPJ). The red numbers are all lower than GT's. The easiest tell is the split averages. From 19-22 our average puts us at 5th in the conferene. From 13-18 our average puts us at 11th. The ACC average is hard to judge by because of a few top heavy teams -- Clemson mainly, but the past few seasons Miami and UNC have helped, with FSU helping out up top before that.

From 13-18, we only recruited better than BC, Syracuse, and Wake. From 19-22 the only teams recruiting better than us are Clemson, FSU, Miami, and UNC. That's a fairly big jump.

EDIT: missed one that is below GT in 2018, Wake's number should be red.

Jesus Christ, can we stop talking about Paul ööööing Johnson already?
That’s the most recent data point we haverecruiting at Tech, so it has to be referenced to judge the current trajectory of recruiting. I mean, we could go all the way back to Gailey but a lot has changed since he was head coach.

I don't really agree on point one. So far we have one big miss (Willis) and one possible (Bonner.) I always kinda thought Azareyeh Thomas was a long shot but maybe you also count him. Most of the other guys were let go or were not fight hard for and some straight up didn't meet grades/test scores or physical goals.

I do agree on point two but there's not a lot we can do about it. They're better spent on HS guys if you're not going to get fired at the end of the year.

I don't really agree here. Backups =/= HS guys. Most HS guys aren't ready to play year 1. Even if it's not a starter or major contributor, a quality backup provides depth and we showed last year that we are seriously lacking depth at several spots.

Great work, thanks!

High School doesn’t give you a lot of contributor ready guys. There’s certainly an argument that HS players are a better long term play. Unfortunately this coach doesn’t have the luxury of long term thinking. He must win next season, and believes transfers are his best path to do that.

You'd be better served to compare Collins recruiting to Chan Gailey recruiting. You know, the era when we did not run a gimmick offense. Something tells me just running an offense that doesn't put kids in the league may hamper recruiting. Forgive my TO stereotypes.

Well, option linemen aren’t necessarily the same guy you would want in a conventional offense. There would certainly be some overlap, but there are definitely different skills that are valued.

There is very little room in a conventional offense for an Aback. Maybe you get a slot receiver (Smith) or a stretch at RB (Jones), but those are probably lower rated guys. Same thing goes for QB.

So you have 8 of 22 starting positions that could have a lower rating even if they were a better fit for the 3O. So any option class will probably be lower rated.

Johnson’s highest ranking class was 8th in the conference. This class is 6th. You were complaining about something???
Harkening back to my days at Tech, here's a little math . . .

8th + Johnson coaching >> 6th + Clown coaching.

There's a pretty clear difference in how the recruiting services rate our recruits the past few years versus the previous years.

Knock the on-field results all you want, the criticism is completely valid. If we're solely looking at the athletes we're brining in, it's been a step change in a positive direction. You can debate how much of it is the head coach versus the offense versus additional resources all you want. It's probably some of each.

The fact remains that this is a group of highly rated athletes.
"Knock the on-field results all you want?" What the actual öööö, man??? Since when did ANYTHING but the on-field results matter??

"If we're solely looking at the athletes we're brining in"

And what kind of ööööing moron would do that? Did 247Sports or Rivals hand out trophies today and I missed it? Did the ACC announce the 2022 Conference Crooting Championship today?

Jesus, Jospeh and Mary, when did so many of you lose the damn plot?

When the season ended so there were no games to talk about, and early signing day happened so there was a bunch of recruiting news to talk about.
