So…Can CGC Coach? Here Are Some Facts…

I figured we had at least two losing seasons staring us in the face. Like all of us I was hoping for close to a .500 season this year. But we are woefully lacking along the LOS and two recruiting classes won’t fix that. Right now CGC is playing with the hand he was dealt or playing FR and Soph, it has to be one or the other or a little of both.

He is playing with the hand he dealt himself.

There is no excuse for such awful play. He brags about losing close games to teams that are so bad that they beat us and then fire their coach or AD.

When he plays a good team, he throws a dagger in the hearts of people who love Tech. He gets behind 45-0 at half, then brags when the coach of the other team plays his practice players in the second half and tries to keep the score down.

The experiment is over. The absence of coaching has been exposed. Collins is gone. Tech will rise again.

In 2015 & 2016 he was DC at UF. In the SEC his defense ranked 4th in 2015 giving up 18 points a game and 3rd in 2016 giving up 16 points a game … not bad. They advanced to the SEC championship game both years losing to Bama.
In 2011 - 2012 he was CO-DC at Mississippi State. In the SEC his defense ranked 4th in 2011 giving up 19 points a game and 8th in 2012 giving up 23 points a game. The 2011 team beat Wake Forest in the Music City Bowl and the 2012 team lost to Northwestern in the Gator Bowl.
In 2013-2014 he was DC at Mississippi State. In 2013 his defense ranked 5th in the SEC giving up 23 points a game and his 2014 defense ranked 8th giving up 21 points a game. The 2013 team beat Rice in the Liberty Bowl and the 2014 team got roasted by us in the Orange Bowl.
So I would assume he knows more about defense in his left pinky than we do. So I wonder how much, if any at all, does he help our current DC? That would be a good question to ask. We all know CPJ ran the offense, did that interfere with other HC duties like recruiting? I don’t know. Anyway, CGC is no dummy when it comes to coaching. I just know our defense is giving up a whole lot more than 20 points a game. I’ve got to believe most of that has to do with Jimmy & Joe’s. CGC recruits are just FR & SOPH this year. Well … where does that leave us? Before he was ever hired I would have answered that question by saying the new coach has to have four full recruiting classes taking over a program that ran the TO. But next year we’ve got to see some improvement. With Sims at QB this year I believe we did see better offensive production. On defense we’ve got to get better athletes. With that said I do hope the bashing will cease on the message boards. It can’t help recruiting at all.
The resume you listed is far far from being a HC. I actually asked a source that is in a position to know the facts, exactly what you asked...is CGC helping him....I was told that he is a very hands on coach. With the dysfunction I see on D, I don't know if that answer is much of a compliment. There's a huuuge diff in getting physically beat and what I see on Saturdays. CGC's recruits are Soph and Jrs next year. The coaching issue is no longer up for debate next November. We better hope it's positive, because the next guy is gonna have a mutiny on his hands with this degree of coddling when a player blows an assignment (ask Ross).

Ouch....dang it Akin, that's gonna leave a mark!

One more thing, yesterday when our DL lined up against ND’s OL, I turned to my wife and said that looks like boys lining up against grown men. A couple of our OL held there own against ND’s DL but there were two that absolutely got tossed around like rag dolls and about got our QB killed. Like I said … CGC recruits are only FR and SOPH.
Yeah, but his OL is a grad transfer left tackle, a grad transfer right tackle, a 6-6, 350-pound COVID freshman at right tackle and two guys who have been in the program four or five years. There are three redshirt seniors and two redshirt juniors on that ridiculous ATL chart for the O line.
HIs recruits, aside from Williams, Vaipulu in spots and a little bit of Weston Franklin, ain't playing offensive line.
As for his DL - he has Lockhart (third year in the program), the Belgian kid (third year in the program(), Keion White (transfer), Jordan Domineck, (fourth year in the program), TK Chimediza (fourth year in the program), Kevin Harris (transfer), Makius Scott (transfer).
These aren't freshmen and sophomores in the classic sense.

Remember - he's had three recruiting cycles at Tech. He got in the middle of one but he was already recruiting and turned some of those guys (most notably Ahmarean Brown, also no longer here) he was trying to get to Temple into coming to Tech.
His best DL recruit, Ivey, didn't play yesterday. His highest rated OL commit, Rankins, in the 2020 class, has left the program.

Some other time, I'll take a deeper dive into what his recruiting has actually netted us.

odd thing is every time someone brings up one of these ööööty schools I look at players in the NFL and they have more than us. Toledo has 4 more nfl players than us.

If his players and his coaches were showing real progress without some of the same errors over and over and over, then I think I could agree that it is too early to jump to the conclusion about CGC being a clown HEAD coach, but unfortunately, it is as easy to see as the bright sun on a clear day. He is not head coaching material - bottomline. If we continue down this path, I believe his one area of success at GT (improved recruiting) will also begin to suffer greatly, not b/c of what we are saying, but because of what kids and their parents can see on Saturdays. It is brutally obvious.

LOL at this thread. I have only one comment:

Time Out - False Start - Delay of Game - Early Snap

He’s had 3 recruiting classes. That doesn’t explain the embarrassment we’re watching every Saturday. Quit blaming previous coach for Collins being unable to coach talent. They get worse every week. ööööing Toledo scored 28 points on this Notre Dame. Your Coach Clown Waffles scored 0. We have better players than Toledo at this point and if not then Collins isn’t the recruiter you think he is.
He’s only had 2 recruiting classes.

I’d almost be willing to give you 2.08.

I’m 2017, Temple lost their homecoming game to a terrible UConn team. In 2018, they lost to ööööing Villanova.

In 2019, Georgia Tech lost to the ööööing Citadel. Followed by a total limp dick effort against Temple. Last year, we were the only team Syracuse beat, which is ööööing embarrassing. This year, we lost to Northern Illinois University, a school I couldn’t find even though it’s in their goddamned name.

So no, Geoff Collins cannot coach. He has a history of his team losing to teams they should easily beat. Every single season as a head coach, his teams lose a game that is inexcusable.

Defense is so bad it might be the worst we’ve seen since GOL. That has nothing to do with sophomores and freshmen. He’s a terrible coach and any idiot can see that. We are playing worse defensively then we ever had in the last three years with this clown. All of CPJs defensive coordinators had better showings then this turd.
All I can say is historically he’s done pretty well as a DC … the question is will he fix it at GT as an HC.

PJ would win 10 games minimum with the talent we have right now. It’s not a talent issue
It’s a focus issue. And it starts with this idiot staff trying to make practice fun with blasting music, dress up games, and posing for photos with stuff like crowns and goblets. The staff itself it too busy doing stuff like trying to be ATL celebrity and dicking around at Braves games that they apparently cant gameplan.

I agree with you, CPJ is a dynamite coach. But it is hard to get P-5 talent to come play in that system. Just look at what CPJ did with Gailey’s recruits.

I hope I get to see Tech rise again, I ain’t no spring chicken. A couple of times I thought we had turned the corner and was getting ready to make an extended run of winning but then the coaches left. First it was Ross and then Fridge and O’Leary. As a boy I was around for the last several years of Dodd, it has been hard to watch the program go though the dry spells we have experienced.

Clown has driven us into the desert - and now the radiator is empty.

GoldenIsle, there is no optimism allowed. Life is a bitch. You are born, you suffer, you die. Anybody that thinks differently is an idiot. You need to go beat your head against the wall and shut up. Everything is terrible and getting worse.
