In 1980 we have a coach with no head coaching experience and only 4 years experience as an assistant. We go 1-9-1, 1-10, 6-5, and 3-8 his first four years. I would say Bill Curry and CGC have a lot in common except I believe Bill Curry ended up with some pretty good assistant coaches. Then in 1987 we hire Bobby Ross who was a proven winner. Well … he starts out 2-9 and 3-8 but ends up with a natty. Of course Ross had a great coaching staff. So here we are again. My question is do we have the talent that Curry had in 1984 when he broke out of the slump and that Ross had in 1989 when his team started winning? My second question is does CGC have the coaching staff that Curry had in 1984? I know he doesn’t have the coaching staff that Ross assembled, that’s not even close.

I'll give you Don Lindsey, but Rip Scherer? He was the Dave Patenaude of the '80's.

I think Collins has the staff, and we have the talent, but this is a whole new team and very new coaches, it is hard to predict what will happen this season

I'm honestly more excited this season than in 20/21 simply because more dead weight is gone and we have a name brand OC and QBC

I agree, I think we have all the tools in the world, we just have to execute

First off lets not make comparisons to 40 years ago and think that things are relevant. Look at the P5 and tell me which schools in the last 10 years have retained a coach who won only 9 games in 3 seasons? Kansas is the only one that comes to mind. The fact that CGC was given an unnecessarily long contract should be grounds to fire TStan for cause. Losing to NIU at home is grounds to fire CGC for cause. I've been a GT fan since 1990 and I never lost faith in Tech's ability to compete. But with the way things are run there now the program is a joke. Even my own kids make fun of me for being a Tech fan because the program is such a mess. And these are kids who were by my side cheering on GT 5 years ago.

Sounds like some kids need to be grounded.

Omg - came here to post exactly that. Not until we dropped that doofus and got Painter in here + Lindsey did things turn around. Scherer couldn’t hold a candle to Pat.

As a freshman at Tech I knew what play was coming up. Up the middle, up the middle, up the middle, punt. Curry would defend the play-calling post-game by saying he didn’t think the other team would think that we would run the same play 3 straight times.

Sherer was terrible. I was a kid during his run and thought my dad was going to internally combust due to his play calling.

Some of the plays were draws. Not every one was a dive or a trap. You overlooked all the variety!

So in 2015 - when we won three games - did you feel like the program was building something special? Did our five wins in 2017 give you confidence that we were headed in the right direction?

And the 2012 season was 11 years ago.

2015 was a disaster from injuries. Even then, we lost most games by a single score.

2017 looked like we needed to find a QB and we’d be fine. I was more disappointed in 2018 when we didn’t have a replacement for TM, even though we won more games.

Past 10 starting QB by season : Sims(2),Ensemble(1),TM(2),JT5(3),Lee(1),Washington (1)

Apples and oranges. Two different eras.

I didn't mention 2012; someone else did. But the last I checked 2012 is 10 years before 2022, which would fall into the "past 10 years" category, since the 2022 season has not been played yet. Did you react to the 1991 season the way you apparently react to the 2017 season? Tech has ALWAYS had ups and downs, at least since the mid 50s, but we have only had a string of disastrous seasons under Curry and Collins.
