Spurrier

His decline has been evident ever since he left Florida. The lowest year he had there was a 9-4 year. Since his time in South Carolina, he's just continued the forever meritocracy of the team.

when he beats ugag this year it will silence these critics. b/f him they never won at tenn had not beaten uf since 1930.

He will always win some that he shouldn't.

Spurrier's a good coach, albeit an aging one, who simply doesn't have near the talent he needs to compete on a level field with most of the teams in his division. USC has been the graveyard of many a good coach.

mediocrity?

Ah screw it. I was meaning to say they're going to forever be a mediocre team.

Dude...are you wearing a "soft helmet"

Spurrier is one of the best football minds we'll ever see in this lifetime.

He's a helluva coach, albeit he's had a rough time at USC, but his career in general (coach, player, whatever) is one to be respected and honored.

had USC gone better you wouldn't even be speaking....it's not like it's the premier college....and it's damn sure hard to recruit for students to come to the Armpit of the south.

He's basically just got HIM to sway kids...those who truly want to learn will be dumb not to go....but you can't get everyone.

I've actually met with the guy personally. he's a helluva dude and a damn genious when it comes to the game. For God's sake he not only won the heisman, he coached a heisman winner. Not to mention he was an all state baseball and basketball player in HS too.

Spurrier...helluva player, helluva coach, helluva guy and damn fine American

Go back to bed, Steve.

Nope...Not a man crush. But I do respect a person/winner such as himself.

I'd always liked him (even though way back when I didn't understand his antics) until I got the opportunity to play golf with him

True Story:...if you don't mind I'll elaborate at brief as possible
I played with him last year at the Ritz @ Reynolds for the ChicFila AlmaMater Bowl Tourney (the one that comes on at Christmas) They actually have 2 pro-ams during the festivities. 1 the day before the Coaches event where they play with a famous alumni (grad or athlete) and then another seperate ProAm while the Coaches event is going on (actually got grouped with Kellen winslow Sr that day...not bad)

Spurrier is a good stick. He called me Bobby Dodd all day cause of my Tech Attire/headcovers, etc and since there was another dude in our 5 some with the same first name.

Anyway, people approached for autographs about every 5 or 6 holes and he signed everything (even made it out to your uncle if you wanted)

Well one guy kept coming back with more and more stuff and eventually quit having it made out to someone....instead just wanted his "X". Spurrier said "Hey, you're back" to him and then asked "who'dya want me to make it out to" and the guy said just your sig coach will be fine and this is after he's signed atleast 20 items here and there

So I'm in the cart with him and I said ... does that ever get old..."Seriously?" He said "Nope, not at all. But that guy ...hell he's just doing it for money so he can go sell it. that's why I kept asking who he wanted it made out to" and "thats the only time you don't necessarily get frustrated but at the same time you think ok enoughs enough"

Honestly, I agree with him 100% and I'm not the one gettin' approached daily.

But...and here's the finally.

I said "Coach, can you do one thing for me"...."What's that Bobby?"...Please beat the hell outta UGAy this year. He said "..chuckle...Bobby, I don't beat the hell outta a lot of folks, I'm gonna be doin a helluva lot more golfin' than I'd Like to"

Anyway, it was a fun day....that's my story....if you don't like it...I don't care cause I had a blast and had the honor of meeting a College Football hero of mine.

In other words, a man crush.

I don't want to take a thing away from what Spurrier accomplished. He will always be considered a great coach. However, when you put together seasons as he has, you cannot say he is still a great coach unless you say that half the SEC coaches are great. Further, nothing Bobby Bowden has done recently takes away the fact that he was a great coach. And if in 15 years Urban Meyer has had a lot of 7-win seasons he will still have been a great coach.

But, when that later mediocrity occurs, everyone can ask if they are still a great coach.

Always used to have the hate for Spurrier (REMEMBER THE ORANGE BOWL!) now not so much. What he's missing at USCe is some top caliber QBs. He hasn't had one above average or who wasn't a discipline case. I guess you'd have to question his recruiting? I don't know. Does kind of seem like he's slacking up a bit and leaning more toward the easy life. Couldn't blame him for that. bastard

I don't know that I would call USCe the 'armpit of the south', seems like that is in Athens!

Spurrier...helluva player, helluva coach, helluva guy and damn fine American

He showed his incredible coaching ability at the Libety Bowl when GT played Texas Tech. Helluva job with our substitute QB after Eddie was dismissed.

I'd always liked him (even though way back when I didn't understand his antics) until I got the opportunity to play golf with him

Great story. Thanks for sharing.
