He's not wrong. It's extremely simple to correct. There needs to be a main FOH engineer sitting at the main mixing console that controls the PA speakers. That mixer probably doesn't need more than 16 inputs.
1- PA announcer
2- Input from DJ
3- Input audio from video board feed
4- Auxiliary input for any other music they wish to play
5- Wireless microphone for on-field use
6- Head Referee mic
7-16 backups for each of the above and spares/extra on-field mic channels.

The DJ does not need independent volume control. His system should be limited so that no matter what he plays, there is a constant signal strength going to the main console. Same goes for everything else. Once gain structure has been set on every channel, there should barely be any need to move any faders other than to fade the DJ out as play resumes. There should also be a system limiter in an external processor between the mixing console and the amplifier inputs. This ensures that the proper signal reaches the amplifiers and makes it nearly impossible to blow the speakers if your engineer as much as half ass knows what he's doing. The only other requirement for this job is that the FOH engineer know how to follow a football game. If music is playing when it shouldn't, all he has to do is pull the main fader(s) down and nothing comes out of the PA. There is no button that needs to be mashed, you don't have to mute channels. Just drop the main fader and nothing goes thru the PA.

All of that and upgrade the speakers. You should be able to feel the bass from McCamish.

You are correct. I was waiting, and waiting to no avail. The shock value of the turnaround probably threw everyone off, including the inhouse replay guys. I wanted to see where the defender actually came from.

This. I don't know who is in charge of that but I wish they would get in contact with Danley Sound Labs based out of Atlanta. They are one of the premier speaker manufacturers and stadium sound installation companies around. We apparently do use Danley speakers at Russ Chandler but we need an overhaul of BDS with their product also. Take a gander at their customer list:

All this self-inflicted stuff is ridiculous. You’d think we could figure it all out and then remember what we learned from year to year, but no.

The playing of the music all the way thru Pitt's play was odd to say the least. First time I can ever remember witnessing that.

I hate to hold up uga as a comparison for the way something should be done, but their AV and Gameday stuff is nuts compared to ours. Before the game you can hear the stadium pulsing and it draws everyone in. Whatever speakers they have in their scoreboard are insane and it sounds like concert quality audio. We have to catch up.

Leading with Mercedes-Benz is probably a mistake. Unless things have been corrected, that place had the worst sound I’ve ever heard in a sports venue.

What happened was the blocking wasn't there, the qb got the crap knocked out of him, coughed up the football, which was scooped in the end zone and promptly returned about 75 yards.

Not really a whole lot you can do in there. That stadium design is atrocious, even more-so when it comes to sound reinforcement. Having the low roof and hole in the dead center top leaves no good places to hang speakers and bad angles where they can hang them. Walls of glass are also terrible for sound reverberation and that whole damn monstrosity is a wall of glass.

Yeah, I get that it's a tough problem. I think JerryWorld in Dallas has similar issues - the sound for a U2 show I saw out there was apparently terrible unless you were right in front of the stage where the direct sound from the mains drowned out all the echoes (which thankfully I was).

They really neutered the Reck's ride out this year. Shit used to be awesome and came at the height of the hype. Now it just kind of happens... and cheerleaders run after... and then the players eventually kind of stroll out. I get that there is more focus on getting the players hyped in the tunnel, but a full stand's worth of students jumping to Zombie Nation used to do that pretty well too.

I'd argue that the bad sound at MBS is as much of an architecture problem as it is an audio system issue. I think Arthur instructed the architects to make the stadium as loud and echo-y as possible. (He didn't like getting fined for pumping in artificial crowd noise.) That building is a nightmare and a half for an audio engineer.

I actually wrote to T-Stan about not running out behind the Reck. I don't care about losing football games during a transition, but don't ruin a tradition that's existed since 1962. I'm not even that old, but it pisses me off to no end. (Old man shakes fist at cloud.gif)
