Takeaways from today's game

I really struggle with the "kicking game is an embarrassment". What was so embarrassing today? From memory:

- Most kickoffs were either fair caught or returned short of the 25 yard line (which is better than the fair catch)
- Our one punt was near 50 yards, net
- King was 4/4 on extra points and missed a field goal....from 50 yards...hardly a chip shot
- Davis made an XP and missed one.

After the game, CPJ said that King was the kicker moving forward. What was so bad?

If you are upset that King couldn't beat out Davis or that we haven't signed a better kicker, fine, but today's performance was not embarrassing. I saw today as the last piece of the competition between King and Davis and King won out. No more rotations in future games.

We're crabby because it's Alcorn State. We beat the brakes off 'em in 2015 and go on to win 2 more games only. Our opponents will be much better right away going forward, we dont have a lot of time for the offense to start gelling.

we only scored 38 against wofford in 2014 and everyone loves to tell me how great we were that year.
seems like maybe the first game of the year isn't that great of a forecast for the rest of the year

Bulovas was hammering kickoffs out of the end zone tonight (sigh) however, he wasn't kicking PATs :bfd:

Curious why you think that? The point of kicking it into the endzone under the prior rule was to prevent giving opposing teams the chance of a long run. That chance still exists, so you'd still like to kick it as deep as possible to prevent that.

Fortunately, the team actually gets to play the rest of the games on the schedule rather than projecting arbitrary opinions of the season's game 1 performance onto those games. Enjoy the ride.

Edited to say that today was an expected W. **Yawn** Our O has some things from the game that they can work on/improve upon. The passing game would be an obvious one though Jalen Camp's catch (non-reception) was impressive. I wouldn't give the D an A+, but it was refreshing to see guys flying to the ball vs. recent years. Oh, and shutout.

I have no basis other than the fair catches used by Alcorn State today

Yep, first game is like preseason NFL. Silly to try to divine much from it.

Many coaches are risk adverse and will take the ball at the 25 rather than try to run it back from the 5. Just my guess.

I’ll believe it when I see it. There have been a lot of returns out of the end zone over past several years when they had the option to start play from the 25. I don’t expect much to change now.

If I were a coach, I’d be fair catching everything inside the 15 unless I had a next level returner and a decent return team.

If I'm am opposing coach, I'm telling my players to return everything they get their hands on until we prove we can stop people.

Defense looked good. Lots of penetration right off the snap - wreaked havoc and affected plays despite only the 1 sack.

Offense looks fine. TM16 still can’t sling it consistently but he’s gonna pick up a lot of third downs this year making LBs look silly. That INT was some bullshit.

Thought kickoffs were pretty solid actually. Not sure what all the whining is about there.

Overall I was happy. Shutouts are nothing to sneeze at regardless of competition. No major injuries. Keep this train moving onto week 2.
