What's up with all the negativity with our fan base? I don't mean that we are negative about our team, but about the outside's perceptions of it. It seems like all we do it bitch and moan about the lack of respect the AJC, ESPN, Heather Dinich, etc. are showing us. Multiple times people have said that we weren't on SportsCenter or College Football Live, when in fact we were. On SportsCenter last night, we were the third highlight, and they only showed one positive FSU play (the sick TD catch). They showed Dwyer's long TD, Marcus Wright's TD, The Theft (twice), and Nesbitt's TD run.
There are two reasons we don't get the respect we want. First, we haven't been an elite program in many years. A good program, yes, but not elite. We haven't won a conference title since 1998. Name another program that hasn't won a conference title since 1998 that gets as much respect as us. Clemson yes, and maybe Missouri and Michigan State. And Missouri was ranked #1 just two years ago. The other reason is directly related to the first reason - we think we deserve more respect.
This post isn't meant to criticize our fans. It's good to think we deserve more respect. But bitching about not getting respect only makes us look desperate. Don't rely on the old crutches: our fan base is too small, ESPN only cares about the SEC (and USCw, Ohio State and Michigan, OU and Texas, and Notre Dame), etc. (Side note: When you say that ESPN only cares about the SEC, and then you add in the elite teams from other conferences, it's clear that ESPN cares about teams that are doing well. Sure, they will cater to large fan bases or teams who have been historically good - and by historically good I don't mean the 1950s - but they will talk about teams who are doing well).
Basically, stop acting like the little brother. We finally have a coach who believes in who we are and doesn't give a **** what others think. Maybe we should do the same.
