Tech is going to the Big Ten!

If the ACC got gutted we could go back to playing Duke every year though. Apparently our second-most cherished rivalry based on the reaction to the ACC's new schedule.

Partly tongue in cheek, partly not -- there really is a lot to be said for having mostly geographically-close opponents. I know many Duke, UNC, NC State, Clemson, etc. fans just from my time spent in the southeast. That makes me more interested in playing them than I normally would be. Definitely look forward to those games more than, say, Louisville or BC.

Agreed that it's a choice between two far less than ideal options.
I bet that you know a lot of Big10 fans but you may not know that they are Big10 fans.

We would sell visiting tickets like hotcakes the first time through the rotation of opponents. After that maybe less, but there are big alumni groups for all those schools in the southeast.

Other than Clemson which school is a short car ride?

And if we were to go, Clemson and FSU would not be far behind us.

And as to the "the Big10 gets more of the deal than GT does." that is irrelevant. We bring the same thing to them as we do the ACC and we would get twice as much money. If the Big10 gives us more than the ACC then it is asinine to stick with the ACC.
This. There is minimal interest in traveling to most ACC away games. Clemson, FSU, and Notre Dame are the only that interest me and if the ACC blows up they will ask be gone. It would be fun to travel to Michigan or Ohio State every few years.

I'm sure B1G leadership is anxious to get a bad football team and the worst ACC basketball team to join. They can't wait for more games with 25k in attendance.

Compared to Michigan, Mich St. Penn St and such. UNC, Duke, Clemson and FSU isn't so bad. I disagree about Clemson and FSU, however. I imagine that Clemson and at least (FSU or Miami) would be plucked by the SEC.

Very possible. I've seen the packed Big X bars up in NYC too. Although depending on how big the fanbase are we might end up with multiple games where we feel like the visiting team at home.

Playing interesting teams who are closer can be viewed as playing interesting teams who are farther away, but I think there has to be a value in playing interesting teams over dull or crappy teams ahead of that. Would it be worth keeping Duke, WF and UVA if it meant replacing some of the others with the likes of Marshall and Old Dominion?

I don’t see Clemson, FSU, or us getting plucked by the SEC. The SEC can let those schools die from lack of funding and improve schools they currently have.

Which is the same thing they could have done to Texas and Oklahoma...but they didn't.

Obviously that is a problem, but the selfish reason they have to overlook that is that the Atlanta area has a significant concentration of football talent that would be easier to tap if they had GT as a team.

On a side note, how much are we getting from tickets and seat fees right now? Is it fathomable that the conference payout difference is bigger than the total of our ticket sales? I would bet that if we joined the Big 10 we could make the tickets free and the AA budget would still be better off.

I don't see the parallel, beyond that there is likely a defensive aspect in who the SEC grabs. The only reason to grab GT is to prevent the Big 10 from grabbing us. Same for Clemson and FSU.

Which is why I didn’t include Miami, although FSU could make a case. Texas brings a huge trove of money. And Texas is a huge state. OU is a new market.

We don’t travel well already. I’m not why this is an argument. Clemson is our only driving distance rival as nobody goes to the cesspool anymore. We don’t really get too many fans to Clemson anymore either. Used to be a big road trip game.

If I had known Collins was going to get canned before Pitt, I’d have been there. I’ve been to bowls all over the place, have been everywhere in conference except for Cuse and Looieville. Been to Vandy, fake Vandy (Miss St), ND, UCF, USF, BYU, etc. Only time I’ve seen a lot of GT fans away from Atlanta is Clemson, ND Gator Bowl, NC game in Orlando.

There’s about 10 issues people I know cite as excuses in order of priority: too cheap, busy with work, too cheap, kids growing up, too cheap, team isn’t winning enough, too cheap, too cheap, too cheap and too cheap.

FSU used to be a big travel game between the two schools. The ACC killed that by putting us in the coastal instead of Maryland.

I think pragmatic is the word, not cheap. But your sentiments are correct.

I am constantly shocked that Tech alumni are only 1 out 5 (a millionaire). If you got out of Tech and simply worked hard (average hard), and didn't waste your income up your nose or something stupid, you'd be a millionaire. Tech grads can get up to $100,000 income pretty quickly, it doesn't take long to create $1,000,000 in wealth. That builds a safety net for yourself and it's easier to give back to Tech.
