That "Empty Feeling"

You know the one. In 2002 we go 7-5 end up in the out west bowl and lose to Fresno St with some of the worst QB play ever seen by a Tech team after getting smoked by UGA 51-7.

In 2003 we go 7-5 and end up on the blue field where we crank out an impressive win against Tulsa. Of course we lost to UGA to end our regular season, but not nearly as bad as before.

In 2004 we grind out another 7 wins, lose to UGA by throwing the ball out of bounds and lobby ourselves into the Champ Sports Bowl where we beat a practically dead Syracuse team with a coach heading out the door.

In 2005 we lose to UGA again because we cannot generate any offense and we go to the Emerald Bowl where we get our clocks cleaned by Utah in the worst bowl loss by any GT team ever. 7 win season and we lost the last 2 games.

In 2006 we look poised to have our best season in almost 20 years. We are 9-2 heading into UGA, where we have our best chance of beating them in 6 years. We flush every opportunity down the drain, handing UGA the win ona silver platter because of inept play calling, inept decision making, and overall questionable coaching. We back that up by going to the ACC championship game and have our first chance since 1990 to win the ACC outright playing Wake Forest of all teams, the cinderella story of college football. Carrying the same offensive philosophy from the UGA game into the Wake game, we totally blow the best opportunity we've had, and they don't come often.

We end up in the Gator Bowl instead of our first birth in a BCS bowl. We start a new QB where we scrap it out with a damn good WVU team just to come up short. The game raised more questions about our program than it gave answers. 3 game losing streak to end the season 9-5.

This year all the pieces seem to be in place. But my empty feeling still resides within me. I think we will go 5-3 in conference. We will end up 8-4 on the season. We won't go back to the Gator, much less a BCS bowl birth, and we will be staring a (GASP) rebuilding year next year. We will look back on the 2006 season as our best opportunity to have done something and we didn't. The empty feeling will grow even more. We will tolerate it though because we will beat UGA for the first time under this coach, and people will point to that as an improvement going forward tolerating more....

Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda.. I'm tired of it.

Get it done Jackets.

We always lose games we shouldn't too. I think that'll be UVA this year. :(

I think everyone here knows what you mean, BOR. I think everyone's main cause for optimism is the fact that we got rid of that Auburn boy at OC.

It has always been my opinion that Nix lost us the WF game, and probably UGA,..... and probably ND. Let's hope John Bond provides us with some consistently good play-calling.

Wow, way to start a seaon with some optimism. If I was able to get myself so depressed before the first game kicks off I'd just stop watching.

I don't really have an empty feeling, but what I do have is a feeling that a let down is inevitable. No matter how good we start off or how hyped up everyone is about the team I feel that a swift kick to the balls is always right around the corner.

However, if we beat ND and UGA, the annual buttkicking and letdown games wouldn't be quite so bothersome.

Call me crazy, but can't we just forget about that stuff for a few weeks to see how this team does before we start the pessimism? It ain't called a new season for nothing.

I concur with this viewpoint. I'm excited about the start of the '07 season and the prospect that the team can make it something special. I'm hoping to fend off that swift kick to the balls, as previously mentioned.

Come on BOR, hang in there. I think we are done rebuilding.

10-2
7-1

Orange bowl here we come.

I was right last year except the BCS and I will be right this year!

Fellas, I'm just telling you that I think we go 8-4 during the regular season. I think we will go to a mid tier bowl and we may win it. Problem is we will have an 8 win season and everyone here will be looking at last year saying we blew our opportunity and because we didn't meet our expectations this year the feeling of the program moving forward will grind to a halt.

We have to get off of this track. Gailey has to get off of this track. If this fan base experiences the season as mentioned above then I think its going to be the final nail in the coffin. You'll have two sets of fan bases... one that said we improved on the season by having 8 wins and beating UGA and another who will think we should have done that the last 4 years and we've seen no improvement.

It sucks that we always have this in the back of our minds. BUT, with this being a new season with plenty of reasons to be optimistic, I've drowned out that little voice that keeps telling me about these letdowns. The voice will get louder as the season goes on. For now, it can be silenced by good ole Samuel Adams.

I'm not quite as worried - until last year, Chan has been playing with a 1-deep team at almost every position. Last year was the first time he really had talent and depth on both lines - and if we had gotten any QB play in the UGA game or the ACC-C game we'd feel alot better about the overall results last year.

This year we still have the depth and experience on both lines and that almost always sets up for a successful season. I'm still concerned about QB but I'm encouraged that we won't see the same level of mistakes made there - we probably won't see as many big plays either but if he can do enough to hold on to the ball, convert 3rd downs, and move the chains then we'll be in good shape. What concerns me is we still don't know how Taylor will react when the team is down by 10 pts in the 4th Q and needs to lead a comeback. Hopefully, we're not in that position very often.

Also, we should have one of the best teams in the ACC this year but there are several teams that could beat us if we're not playing near our best - VT, Miami, Clemson, BC, even Maryland or UVA (given our history in C-Ville). I'm pretty sure they all want to win, too.

and if a frog had wings.... Why worry about what might happen? Enjoy the season while you can and if things go sour, react then. This just seems like a preemptive whine.

Man, what a depressing post. Here I was looking forward to whipping ND tomorrow, going on to a 10+ win season and beating the Dawgs, and possibly a BCS bowl, but I guess I'll just go ahead and kill myself instead.

I take it you think we're going to lose tomorrow since you think we'll go 5-3 in conference, beat UG, and finish 8-4...

Maybe Tech is past the "annual Chan Gailey debacle"...at least I hope so.
There's actually two flavors of said debacle. There's the headscratching, how in the world did we lose that game and then there's the pure annihilation.

BOR, dont tell me you truly feel like that? Just tell me you recognized the possiblity of misfortune and that you have not really succumb to those whisperings.

Dont be reserved about your expectations for the season just because you dont want to be let down. Its good that you feel absolutely crappy after a loss because that means you put your heart and faith out there completely. Thats means that you believe we can win; win every play, every series, every quarter, every goal line stand, every 3rd and long, every 4th and inches, every comeback, every game. And thats what you have to believe.

Its a new season, a new chance, and new hope. This is rebirth. Dont toe the water, my friend. Jump in and tread forward with total disregard. Set the bar high (Nat'l Champs! ~gasp!~) and go from there reaching for that bar. Because this year is OUR year!

GO JACKETS!

Its not that I feel badly about this coming season for what might happen. I've never gone into a season before with negative expectations. But I do expect the bad will happen. I expect the severe disappointment from our fan base coming. I've grown so accustomed to it year to year that for the first time going into a season, its not a matter of IF its a matter of WHEN, and I won't be disappointed when it does.

Its a terrible way to view a season. But its like Pavlov's Dog. You get ingrained the same feeling over and over again, year after year, the dinner bell rings, and I begin to drool before I even see the food. Its just sucky to feel that way, but I can't really help it.

i think this is a fair assesment, 7-8 wins and lose again to ugag, that is life with CHAN.

lets see, with about 20 teams thinking they have a chance, and with about 30 fan bases thinking their teams have a chance to be really good, it makes sense that many will be somewhat disappointed

Jackets have performed above the expectations of those whos job it is to evaluate us against the competition, yet people here are always complaining

BoR, only one team can win it, many have losses that they dont think they should have incurred (like Auburn against Tech twice in 3 years)

if you look at successful athletes, they are always able to put past negatives to the side and approach the next opportunity without the recollection of failure

i think fans need to learn the same thing

we need to have fun with it. if its that much of a downer, why even take part?

right now, GT is UNDEFEATED and with a chance to win every game.

have fun Jackets, and kick some ass
