That freakin' Field Goal Attempt

Actually, according to commentators, the wind was behind us - I think the FG attempt was worth the effort. Unfortunately, the assumption that went with it was erroneous (that we would hold them three and out and get the ball right back).

What lost it was poor defensive execution (lots of arm tackling, poor pass coverage) and an untimely dumb-ass penalty.

We really missed Kenny Scott today. Word-Daniel was clueless out there.

Travis Bell's career long is 46. Punt it, pin them and force them to run their offense differently.

Agreed. A punt to try and down inside the 10 was the best call. Going for it was the next best call. A 55 yarder with Bell, a wet field and ball, just to tie with significant time left - the worst possible choice.

Special teams were horrible today - a three point difference at least. Kickoffs were terrible, returns below average, punting the worst I've seen from Brooks all year. The onside call was terrific, but T Clark gave it right back and more with his terrible play.

That's putting it nicely. However, with all of our timeouts left, over 5 minutes, and knowing exactly what wvu would do, our defense laid another late game egg.

Punting would have been the right call. That said, we needed to do something.

I'm more pissed at te fact that our defense forgot how to tackle. These kids obviously had a very fluffy light practice that had minimal contact because it showed on defense.

Honestly, I would rather see a pass to CJ into double-coverage over that FG attempt.

The field goal decision is now 20/20 hindsight. According to the crack CBS announcers the wind had changed to our favor and there was over five minutes left. It would have been good two yards closer. If we had punted and not held, most people would be saying "We should have tried a field goal."

The decision would have been a moot point if we had not had the idiotic penalty after TC made the first down.

Actually at my place everyone was saying it prior to the kick.

Good post BeeGone. CCG is consistently danged if he does, danged if he doesn't from a lot of posters on this board.

No. It was a bad decision period.

Was the onside kick to start the second half a good decision by Gailey? Let's hear your 20/20 hindsight analysis. :laugher:

I don't fault him for the 54 yard attempt. We still had time if we would have stopped them on defense. Give them credit. they made the plays to runout the clock. Their QB White does remind me a lot of Vince Young.

My post was certainly not directed toward you GT65 - I appreciate the positive way that you stick with your opinion in your posts.

Horrible call. The longest FG in the history of the NFL was in Denver with a tailwind and was 63 yards. You lost to Georgia. You lost to a putrid Wake Forest team. You made a mistake sticking with R5#$(( B#** for too long. Why don't you play TO WIN instead of hoping not to lose. My feeling is the plan flew out the window after the swing pass was dropped on 3rd down. Gailey / Nix were dumbfounded after that. Hats off to CJ, Taylor Bennett, and our FG kicker who gave it a great try.

What the hell does the FG attempt have to do with the onside kick. Trying a 54 yard field goal in the rain with a kicker who has never kicked a FG of that length was a stupid decision. IMO you have a better chance throwing to CJ on 4th down than you do kicking that FG. Laugh that off.

I remember people during, IIRC, the Troy game saying that throwing a fade to Calvin was a terrible call because it took a weird bounce that became an interception.

I just don't know, with the new clock rules, whether we could have punted, stopped them and driven back into field goal position. Just like the 4th and 13 against Wake, we really screwed ourselves over with the penalty on the previous play.

Knox, I distinctly remember your reaction to playing WVU was "9-5 here we come." With that kind of attitude, I'd say we played well in this game.

I'll be the first to admit we played a helluva game offensively. You have to understand I posted that under the assumption that Reggie would be playing.

Turns out I was right anyway, wish I wasn't.

No problem haywire. I'm seldom upset with anyone who posts here, fans are going to disagree on things from time to time. The way I look at it, we're all bonded together for the common cause. ;)

Your point is not entirely true....

I say he is questioned directly proportional to the outcomes of the games. I say had we closed 3-0 rather than 0-3, all of which were winnable games, the tone of the fan base would be considerably different. I think Chan or any coach has a great degree of influence on how he is perceived by the fan base.
