That freakin' Field Goal Attempt

We had two timeouts left and WVa had been running on us all day long. I told everybody around us that we were in four down territory with time left. We needed to get some points there or the game was over. I would have preferred we go for it myself.

to me it was a go for it or kick situation.

It does not matter what we chose to do...if we did not succeed with the decision people would question.

Just like the gutsy onside kick call...if it did not work then people would be screaming. Instead, it lead to a GT touchdown to start the half and we were up 35-17.

There was no doubt in my mind that going for the field goal guaranteed a loss while punting left the issue up in the air. WVU, like all teams, played it a bit closer to the vest when pinned back. Also, our defense would have been pumped to stop them and get the ball back. As it was, they knew that even a stop would mean we'd have to drive the field some 80 yards or more.

The decision to kick a 54 yarder with 5 minutes left in a game thats a 3 pointgame and he has just been quoted the same day that you dont want the kicker kicking 48+ yards field goals (essentially saying you have no confidence in him because you would never say that unless your were stupid which could be the case or you actually had no confidence.) was a terrrible call by a moron head coach. Our kicker can barely kick a 45 yarder most of the time!

Prevent, Bell's problem is normally accuracy not distance. I don't know if he can kick it that far but would assume he's done it in practice or we wouldn't have tried it. To me, it was a go for it or try the fg situation.

It was said in an article that he has kicked them that far in practice before, so it's not as if the coach hadn't seen him do it. So, that kick was makable - not guaranteed, but makable. However, even if he had made the kick, with how easily wv marched down the field when we had to hold them, it wouldnt have mattered anyways. They easily got back into field goal territory, and more than likely could have scored a td if they really wanted.

This fact remains - nobody knows what would have happened had we done something else. Whether it was go for it, punt it, etc, nobody knows. We could have gone for it and thrown a pick-six. No way of knowing. The coaches went for a call in a situation that wasnt a cut and dry situation. Easy to second guess it now, but quite honestly, people would have second guessed any of the other possibilities as well.

funny isn't it...Alabama cannot find a head coach and there are plenty right here on this board they are missing out on!!!!
