The GT Logo

Semi-related question: why the hell did we start using the GT Buzz with a navy blue background on ESPN? It looks terrible in such a small space.

This pisses me off to no end. It started in the middle of the season for no reason and it looks horrible and often unidentifiable.

I remember this logo as a kid. In fact, I still have an old sweat shirt from my high school days that has this logo on it. I also have a hat and a beach towel with this logo.

I used to have a... Blue... hat with the incorrect logo. I'm ashamed of it. For both of those reasons.

We fought for years to get SGA on the list of entities that could use the seal. Glad to see that they actually acknowledge it on the logo sheet.

Oh, Buzz. They are so picky about his shoes and his teeth (needs to have teeth but can't be too "toothy"... I think they actually insist on exactly four teeth visible) that it gets really funny sometimes. True story: GTPD wanted Buzz with a holstered gun. Licensing and Trademarks decided that they didn't like that, so I think he got a nightstick. However, Buzz with other weapons (swords come to mind) is just fine.

We made an awesome buzz with moustache and they didn't let us put it on t-shirts.

This has been like nails across a chalkboard to me this season. What makes it even worse is that I thought the previous graphic they used, a BLACK GT on a yellow background, was wrong too. Instead they put a GT + Buzz graphic on a blue background. Freaking horrible. I'm not sure if there is a worse school at branding than Georgia Tech.

What's so hard about a big, beautiful white GT on a gold background??????

There was an article about it in the recent Alumni magazine. It was apparently conceived by an student (was was also a pretty good artist) who did artwork for the campus humor magazine.

Perhaps I'm mis-remembering...did someone else see this article?

IIRC it was done in 1966 or 67 by an Arch student; he gave it to the school and it was patented/trademarked by Tech.

I'd rather have a black GT on a gold background than the stupid navy blue logo that ESPN uses.

I like the GT, but I also liked the old T. We were known as Tech countrywide. Today we've given that title away to VPI and others. I don't care for that.

I wish they'll sell so throwback type merchandise with the old T, especially a hat.

I checked out the sports logo website and found one thing interesting....the Uga(g) logo shows it as being registered and right under it is a school, Grambling State with the same exact G in an oval except for a yellow background. How could Georgia register that logo they stole from Green Bay and then it they did, how could Grambling State get away with using such an identical logo? In any case, they both look like crap!

I heard Green Bay stole it from UGA.

Green Bay had the "G" logo before dooley came to ugag. Word back then was ugag had to get a release (or wtte) to use it.

I, in 1967, heard Sarge Hodges (the old CBD equipment mgr) had designed the "GT" logo. I do know he charged us $1.00 for the helmet decal (remember this was 67) if we wanted one for our cars or whatever.

I always thought this design was above his capabilities, so I don't know if a student did in fact design it or not.

Anyway, it is a great logo.

Not exactly football, but where did our logo come from? Who came first? Did we steal the George Town G and the Tennessee T or did they steal from us?

There is an in depth feature on this very subject in the latest edition of the Georgia Tech magazine. A player on the last Orange Bowl team, Jim Gibson, drew the interlocking GT after being asked by Dodd and trainer Buck Andel. He drew it while doodling in class. The story says Gibson handed the sketch to Buck Andel and then left for his summer job. When he returned for fall drills the logo was on the helmets.
