The Patriots: A deflating story

by "mixed bag" they must have meant a bag with "more than one type of Super Bowl ring"; like Eli's GIANTS workout dufflebag

Pretty sure they meant "even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and again but for the vast majority of the time your team will suck if these guys are your starters".

the only nuts Matt Ryan finds is the ones that he lets fall out of his jock at the end of important games when he throws high again scared of getting hit

at least Eli is willing to take punishment to get a ring; he's no Roethlisberger but he is a guy that will go all out to win

Pats might have been doing it for awhile whenever it is rainy: http://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com/blog/?p=2917
When you read of the best hitters instantly knowing the difference in one ounce of bat weight, basketball players knowing the bounce is different, and golfers knowing the difference in a club just by feel, it makes you wonder why with for all intents and purposes every ball was deflated significantly by percentage, Andrew Luck never noticed his grip was different. One would think if one threw thousands of passes every year from the summer through January he would know the feel.

Each side plays with their own footballs, so Luck wouldn't have been using the deflated balls. There were some concerns during the game:

During that game, Colts safety Mike Adams twice intercepted Tom Brady and gave the balls to the Colts' equipment manager to save -- and both times there were concerns about the balls feeling underinflated, sources told Schefter.

Also, if this is such a big deal, why hasnt the NFL done a better job of regulating this?

They have a fairly elaborate process before every game where they measure and approve a set of game balls. The balls at the game passed inspection but were later (allegedly) tampered with.

Exactley....its pretty easy to tamper with a ball, you can deflate it in seconds. So if their need to have the game balls set at a certain air pressure is such a big deal, one would think that they would manage to make sure this process is consistant through out the whole game. It just seems like a huge blunder on the NFL's part if this is such a big deal. I mean, the Patriots cant be the only rocket scientists in the NFL to think that this is an advantage, if in fact it is....

That's the game on Nov 16, not the playoff game.

But yeah it's basically saying that the Pats have been doing it for awhile. And each side uses their own ball.

Same balls would have been used by Indy and it sure as öööö didn't help them any.

No, Indy used their own game balls. These were specifically the DeFlatriot game balls.

But yeah - I don't see how Brady's balls had any effect on Andrew Suck's performance nor a complete inability to stop Lagarrette "Smokes a" Blount.

So I heard this on the radio today as a possible explanation -

The ball needs to be inflated within a range. Brady may prefer the low end limit of the range and Luck may like the high end limit.

The balls are tested before the game and are within the range. As the cold wet game plays out the balls lose some inflation. New Englands are now under the low end limit but Indy's remain within the limit. All of the balls lost air, which is why 11 of 12 for the Pats were under.

Plausible?
