This is why we need to dump Russell

Kids are stupid, even some of the ones that come to Tech. You are telling me if the best prospect in GA wanted to come to Tech because he liked our uniforms you would tell him to screw off? I doubt it.

If a kid said he wanted to come to Georgia Tech primarily because of our uniforms...I would not have to tell him to "screw off" because he would not have the grades to get in...or the scruples to stay in.

Therefore, this scenario is impossible.

The same kids that primarily worry about that crap also worry about the size of the crowd, how easy the major is, and mostly believe they will all make millions in the NFL.

I'd like to see/hear CPJ's reaction when a recruit chooses another school over GT b/c of uniforms.
And uniforms, unfortunately, figure into the decision for some recruits. Just as facilities, TV exposure, road games, etc. Too many are just kids with little or no guidance. If they like red or orange, I guess we're just S.O.L.

Kyle, you do know Dodd has a son, right?

And if the unis did not matter, why would we, it would appear, be changing them? I have read many posts where it has been said we are changing because a lot of S/As wanted it changed.

Wonder if that might apply to recruits as well

I have yet to hear 1 reason why we should keep Russell. I'd love to get Under Armour actually.

Sorry, have no respect for Under Armour after those extremely gay "We must protect this house!!!" commercials.

So one kid picked the Ducks because he has hideous taste in uniforms. Who cares. For every color blind jackass that wants to look like an idiot every weekend in the fall, there's probably 5 kids who could give a rat's ass as long as the team wins. I'm sure there's also plenty of recruits who don't want to get the Nike swoosh on everything they own.

nice post :laugher:

Ironically he talked about that. He said little things like that can actually sway a recruit and as stupid as it seems, not only uniforms, but he said he wanted to spiffy things up around the facilities to help themselves.

While no recruit makes his sole decision on something so trivial and impertinent as uniforms, it is a factor for some kids....yes that IS eye opening but it is the truth!

first, we just re-upped with them so they will be around for a while

but second they gave a GT a sweet deal. The merchandising rules and number of "comp" type apparel they can make for GT on GT's request is a very good situation for the AA. They essentially give it to GT for free....

Face it...it was another GTAA business decision nothing to actually help the common fan. Despite rad, that aspect has not changed.

I'm pretty sure there are more kids that want a swoosh on everything they own rather than a stupid R.

I actually don't think they care about the swoosh, they just want stuff that looks cool and performs (is comfortable, etc.). The problem I've always had with Russell is that part of it. If they can improve the quality and selection of their stuff it will negate the Nike influence.

The R will never, EVER, compete with the Swoosh. Russell is old school, but in a lot of ways that fits well with the desires of the Wonderbread alums of my alma mater.

For me, I prefer the look of new syle uni's of the U, FSU and Oregon. At least with the new look we are trying and perhaps it will help draw sidewalk fans with style points.

Who knows, maybe, we will actually appeal to more than just GT alums and fill the stadium without 50% of the fans pulling for the other team.

Bring on Lil' Jon!

The Ducks look like they belong in the Arena Football League. That alone should be enough to not want to get any where near Nike. Half the new Nike uniforms look like a they were put together by a Saturday night rice racer. All we need is some neon lights and glass packs on the wreck, and we're set.

You're old and uncool though, unlike recruits.

I wish we had some flashy new uniforms so we could recruit like Alabama and Penn State.

Oregon's uniforms are the results of a Ronald McDonald with down's syndrome standing next to a roadside IED made of Skittles and paintballs when it went off. If thinking those uniforms look terrible makes me uncool, then I'm really not offended.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, maybe I'm unhip, maybe I don't want my team to look like NASCAR drivers. I like the classics alot better then the new hotness.

A certain caucasian quarterback with the number 13 was a recruit once. Is he really someone you would call "cool"?

Super cool.

My understanding of what many kids like about Nike gear better than some other gear is not necessarily the fact that the uniforms have funky panels of color on them in weird places. I believe that some of them like the fact that the gear appears to be more comfortable and more plentiful than what Russell provides to GT. I can't substantiate that, it's just what I've heard.

On the other hand I think that comparing us to Penn State and Alabama is ridiculous. We aren't like them and we don't have some of the characteristics that they do. We don't have nearly as much money to throw around as they do and our facilities most likely are behind those two schools. We certainly don't have nearly as many students and not nearly as many majors. So suggesting that because something works at a place totally dissimilar to GT that it should work at GT isn't realistic to me.

Folks, don't misunderstand me to say that we don't have our own advantages nor am I saying we should have lower expectations. I just think that if you want to make comparisons that indicate what SHOULD work for us then those comparisons should be with places with whom we share more in common than schools like PSU and Bammer.

My own philosophy is that if I can exploit some little thing to my advantage then why shouldn't I, so long as it doesn't go against my scruples. For example, if I know a young man wants to go to a place in a big city and I'm recruiting against Nebraska then you better believe I'm going to make sure he knows all of the great things about Atlanta. If I know that a young man is interested in majoring in civil engineering then I'm darn sure going to make it my business to tell him how great that program is at GT. And if I can gain even a small advantage by the type of gear that I put on the players then why shouldn't I take that advantage? I'm not suggesting I'd put us in unis like Miami or Oregon but any little advantage I can get I'm going to try and get.

The way I've always been taught to sell is to make it about what's important to the CUSTOMER, not what's important to me. I try very hard to understand what's important to them and make sure they know about everything my product has that addresses what THEY like. There have been plenty of times when a customer has told me they are interested in things I thought were trivial but were important to them. I didn't ignore those things because they weren't important to me. I took advantage of the fact that those things were important to them and played those things up about my products. Seems to me that the same thing holds in recruiting. That's just my general philosophy. Now on the other hand I won't sell out on my principles just to make a sale and to some people changing our uniform style would amount to selling out. I get that even if I don't agree with it.
