you guys have your head in the sand. to a kid from the suburbs or the country, athens/oxford/tuscaloosa/knoxville are grand places. college towns are fun. cities are expensive to party in. in athens you can a PBR tallboy for a dollar. in athens, you're famous. in atlanta, nobody knows who you are. you don't have to take difficult classes and there's 80K at the spring game. why is this so difficult to understand?

you can effectively hate UGag but not be dumbfounded why kids want to go to school there. doesn't mean they are making the best decision.

I agree with some of this. I totally understand playing for a small town, factory school.

We have competitive advantages too. I guarantee our guys will be mini-celebs when we do well. Particularly if we can string together a few great seasons

I see what you're saying. Some valid points. Athens has some bright spots and cool pubs but that's about it. Nothing about it tells me " dang, I really want to spend the four years of my life here". Day and night compared to the dirty in my opinion.
 
Attending UGA is a solid 4 year decision. There really is no arguing that.

Attending Tech is a 40 year decision...I’m reminded of that every 2 weeks when my paycheck shows up. Also, I personally had a fun as hell 4+ years there. Atlanta is an amazing city. Tech has an amazing campus right in the middle of everything.

Living in a small town in Georgia I can confirm this. Every small town in Georgia is covered with uga fans. Play for uga and you’re immediately a celebrity everywhere you go in Georgia (unless you screw up on the field).
 
Not sure why any of that matters. Of course there is a reason that most powers are in smaller college dominated towns.

BUT that isn't what GT has. It can't sell that. There are other ways to skin a cat though. Collins has figured that out and knows what sells GT.

It isn't the same as being in say: Chicago Ill where you are surrounded by mediocre HS football.

GT is in the middle of one of the most talented states in the country and a city that is known for college football. You should be able to get a lot of recruits to see that and enjoy that experience. We aren't going to get them all; we aren't going to get the ones that are set on playing in from of 90k+ fans.

Seeing the way UGA tries marketing it as part Atlanta is evidence that maybe there is something to what Collins is doing. I also know that Auburn and Bama try to talk up playing in Atlanta to recruits.

At this point, I think the only thing GT needs is a little momentum: a few wins, signs of good coaching, putting a few players in the draft; that kind of stuff. All of that will feedback to improve the recruiting.

For one of those spots, I would be taking a DT, even if he is a bit of a reach. For the other, give me best available among DEs, LBs and TEs. Grad transfers preferred to keep as many 2021 spots open as we can.

And we are not going to routinely get small town Ga players, certainly not over UGA. That kinda explains the 404 doesn't it? A uga player might be a celebrity in his small hometown, but nobody is gonna know a uga kid from East Cobb at perimeter mall from adam.

And don't forget that Technology is now COOL, while it was an impediment in the past (Nerds, Calculus, Ratio).

That WAS a huge hurdle for us that is now a selling point.

And lots of people waiting to say you were the failed uga player if you never played. I know a bunch of em through my small town GT friends. They get doodoo'd on if they never actually played by jealous folks. Not a great life.

Yeah, and it is possible our sweet internship opportunities can even counter the bagman somewhat.
 
I think a lot of these kids these days are trying to maximize their potential for the NFL. So they are looking at a program that develops them and also exposure and playing time. I would bet you that UGA really tries to sell their success in putting players in the NFL above just about anything else. If they are high level recruits then they are already heroes/celebrities in their small towns because of what they accomplished in HS.

That and the fact UGAG is in the SEC doesn't hurt them either.

While I agree with that, you can do all those things at the University of Florida, Florida State, Tennessee and Auburn, USC, UCLA, Texas, Oregon and Washington.

What I Don’t understand is why so many football players choose to go to UGA instead of those schools.
