Transfer Portal Tracker

Finally a coach speaks up. The Transfer Portal should not open until the Playoffs and the bowls are complete. The whole process is ridiculous but there is no reason for the portal to open until the season in finished.

I think I'm done with being gracious about guys transferring. If they're going to act purely in their self-interest, without regard for their schools/teams, then why shouldn't I act in my self-interest as a fan? You hurt my team and I'm not wishing you well or honoring your time playing for us.

Sometimes guys have circumstances beyond money that cause them to transfer, but it's really not that hard to say why you're leaving.

100%. It's highly annoying.

Basically if they have graduated or they’re not getting significant playing time, it’s fine. Otherwise, it’s a buzz kill.

Some like NIL and portal. Some love NIL and portal. Some hate it. Some fans tolerate at best. Regardless It matters not one bit to the financial machine that is all about media ratings. Viewership is king. Live attendance is important but I suspect a distant second. So the only change agent left for fans is to impact ratings. As long as we watch and we do watch nothing will change. A ratings strategy has no bond to the nostalgia that many fans like my generation cared about. Think about it this way. The media giants have a model where boosters and collectives and fans fund the rosters (content, actors) of the most watched teams/ reality show. Call this the weekly content lineup that they sell advertising relative to content attractiveness. So the content ( best players) is managed by the universities ( call them outsourced content managers) who in turn are paid handsomely. So the content managers at some point will need to accept that boosters and fans and collectives will likely not continue to pay all the content costs. Oops. Their business model just changed. Margins just changed. Now to play big boy ball the universities (content managers) must engege in the purest form of hiring players in a classic employer - employee model. This is the reality of the only place this will end up. Or media giants pay direct to the players/actors And the universities just manage the events in their facilities/studio?

This is how I watch the game now. Just like watching Seinfeld or Breaking Bad or Sopranos. Simply the entertainment of the game. No more emotional up’s and downs - rarely a live game- my family used to average 8-9 a year regardless of home or away. I have no false pretense of it being anything other than a TV series. So far it is fun watching the series. - mostly because everything else on the screen sucks.

My two cents.

Bowl games (non-CFP) are already a joke. Why would the rules be set up to water down your product even further?

Bowl games used to at least feel like they meant something. Now it’s just dumb.

The only problem is players need to enroll in their new school by the time the new semester starts.

Why do they "need" to do this? From a football perspective (which is the only one that counts in this situation), it's so that they can participate in Spring practice. First of all, Spring practice isn't some hard prerequisite to play in the Fall. It's a "nice to have," especially for an upperclassman who's already proven himself at the collegiate level. But even if this is deemed to be some sort of dealbreaker, just create a new rule that if a player is accepted onto a team in the late winter/early spring Portal, they can participate in Spring practice as if they're enrolled. This simply isn't some intractable problem where we have to accept incentivizing players to quit in the middle of their season.

I’ve felt this way for the past 40 years once players became non-students. I sat in many classes with players from our Natty team and Final Four team and a lot of them weren’t at GT for an education. They were simply players who had no avenue to transfer. That’s when I stopped caring about players. I root for the 11 uniforms.

Tech fans: Georgia Tech is a real school and our student-athletes come here for the degree first. Not everyone ends up making a career in the NFL, our guys get that.

Also Tech fans: The portal should only open after the playoff is over in late January. The players don't need time to find their next school and enroll for spring semester, they aren't real students.

Tech fans before open Pay to Play, unlimited free agency and widespread quitting on your team: Georgia Tech is a real school and our student-athletes come here for the degree first. Not everyone ends up making a career in the NFL, our guys get that.
