Travis Bell

Yeah, but dude, it's a kickoff. The field is wider than the goalposts.

So one mis-kick means he can't kick FGs? Sisson kicked it OB a few times too.

Sisson was also a 60% career FG kicker. Worse in the NFL. He'da been thrown under the bus as fast as Bell, by the criteria being espoused in this thread.

beej67,
saw Sisson play in High School

Don't get me wrong, Sisson is the #2 Tech kicker of all time, IMO, behind Manget, and I have to give extra credit to any Marietta High School alumni who come to Tech.

But yeah. If you're looking at percentages, Sisson wasn't that hot.

Personally, I think percentages only tell at best half the story. Kickers with better legs are put in a position to miss more, because coaches want to try them from longer range. Kickers sometimes miss due to bad snaps too.

Bell had one trash attempt from beyond his range, one bad snap, and one hit upright that have hurt his average. The only thing that bugs me about Bell is two misses from around the 30 this year, including that one upright hit. If Bell hits a couple of clutch game-winners like Sisson used to, I think we'll see everyone in here whistle a different tune.

Then again, lets hope we go ahead and butcher everyone else we play, so we won't need clutch game winners.

Very true, Sisson was Mr. Clutch! Except for the two missed at Unc in '90 and the miss at Clemson for the win in '91. But he more than made up for those misses. Kicked the game winner vs UVa in '90 and '91, beat NCST on a last second fg.

...so for those counting, that's 3 of 6, right? 50%?

beej67,
just checking ...

Now Beej ....

you know he was better than 50% in the clutch. I can't remember them all but I believe he also made a 4th quarter FG to get a W against VPI in 1990 in terrible weather.

Yes I definitely do. But my point is that similar parallels could be drawn between Bell and Sisson, so Bell should be given the benefit of not being thrown under the bus.

Sisson was almost a 70% FG kicker (68%). We also would attempt longer FGs with Sisson.

Since the Auburn game last year, Bell is 11 of 26 (42%) including 5 FGs missed from 36 yards or shorter.

Beej, there is no comparison. People were willing to give Bell a chance after he had an "off year". But he has done nothing this year to inspire confidence for the fans, coaches or his teammates. He apparently can't kickoff and if he's not going to make FG's when given the chance I am not sure what else we can do. It's not like we can move him to OL like some of the guys that didn't work out on DL.

BTW: The Media Guide write up says that Scott Sisson made 6 game wining FG's.

This is what counts..obviously.

The 3 that come to mind immediately are
  • Uva 1990
  • Vpi 1990 (avoided another tie by making a 35ish yarder into a 25 mph wind on our last posession. 6-3
  • 1991 Uva

I am the ultimate players' fan, and I always support the players. However ...
I know that kickers can fall into a mental problem.
However I also know that you should not just "put him back in there and HOPE".

I have ABSOLUTELY no doubt that we need to "throw" Travis Bell, not under the bus, but back into the competetition to be our Kicker. This is best for both Travis and our Team.

Travis needs to be re-invigorated by being forced into showing how good he IS.

TRAVIS NEEDS TO CONCENTRATE ON MAKING THE KICK RATHER THAN NOT MISSING THE KICK. HE NEEDS TO COMPETE FOR THE JOB!

"Chan Gailey can't/doesn't want to recruit kickers."
This seems odd since his coaching strategy relies on field goals a lot.
He feels the same way about QB's...lol

All is forgotten! Clutch performance Travis. Another bad snap, but a great hold and kick on a game tying 40 yarder.
T Choice may have received the "official" game ball, but T Bell deserves one too. Huge game!!!!!!

Great day for TB, and you're right, nice job on the hold on that 40 yarder, for a second there I thought disaster was about to strike.

And also, Brooks was absolutely phenomenal today. He constantly flipped the field position with some clutch punting.

Hey gnats67, do you feel like an idiot?
Why do some of you persist in the petty anti-Gailey venom when you could be enjoying the roses with the other GT fans?
By the way, do you consider Brooks a kicker in your
Chan doesn't want/recruit kickers too?

As of today, Bell is a 66% FG kicker for his career, even with the struggles we've all noted. For the record, the best kicker in Tech history, statistically, as far as I can tell was Luke Manget. His career percentage? 70%. So if Travis had made 2 more of his kicks, he'd be right there.

Hopefully, he's figured out what was wrong and can get back to his freshman form.
