TSTAN Update

It's funny how every person has a different perspective of what was said, or maybe implied, by this email.

how about duke and uva?

I don't know how their facilities compare with ours, but Duke has invested a TON of money in football facilities in the last few years. Each of the last 3 or 4 trips to Durham, you could see that things were changing - new locker rooms, new fan facilities in the stadium (bathrooms, concessions), new press box, etc. They've gotten as serious about football as Duke can get, and it's obviously taken them from "doormat" to "usually competitive."

I've said it already on here. The entire department needs cleared out.

You're an idiot. Let's fire everyone, scorched earth, things will be better!! First AD to show some passion and actually market to GT in 5+ years, and at least acknowledges the issue. If you expect to get a better AD at GT, let alone a better AD after giving the previous AD 1 year to prove himself, then please show me.

FIRE THEM ALLLLLLL

I doubt no one (or at least very few) on here have the first-hand knowledge to comment on the performance of the general staff in the AA or athletic programs. The only ones who can be objectively judged are those with the individual responsibility and outcome of performance, so basically TStan and the head coaches.

I don't blame TStan for the state of the BB or FB programs. Those were in shambles before he showed up and he's taking steps to improve both. However, if he refuses to take significant action when it's warranted (i.e. fire a coach), he becomes accountable for that coach's performance.

One last thing I'll add: when my employees create excuses like TStan appears to do in this letter, it chips away at credibility and gives me the impression that he's in over his head.

Bobby Ross tells the story of his long night riding around Atlanta after the bad loss to UNC. He second guessed his decision to come to Tech, lamented all of the handicaps, questioned himself, his coaches and players, then bought himself an ice cream cone and committed himself to the hard work of turning things around. I will never forget his smile as he boarded the bus in’89 after the win at Clemson. He knew things had turned around. He was one pleased man. And, the next year was magic.

Ultimately, at Tech you simply have to overcome any disadvantages with hard work and determination. Recruiting is hard, academic success comes hard, off season work must be hard. We all know what works against us in the post-Dodd era. Yet, Ross, O’Leary and Johnson have had outstanding seasons, as well as some good seasons. Carson, Fulcher, Pepper, Curry and Gailey had good seasons. Only B*** L**** was unable to have a good season as our coach. When things are down it is time to go to work, not whine. Yes, do things to minimize the advantages of our competitors. But, work hard and winning is possible.

I couldn't disagree more - that he's making excuses here, or that he's in over his head.

Todd Stansbury talking to Coach Johnson (The Bishop) about the future of the program.

I think the other thing in TS' letter is the same point @ibeeballin was making:. Stop trashing our program on social media.

It's a fair point. For years during our bowl streak, every fall I'd shout into the wind against Tech fans continually saying that we don't travel to bowls, despite the actual numbers showing that we're about average. I have friends now who take every opportunity to whine and cry about how terrible we are on social media. Like on Saturday: yeah, I know we're probably going to lose to Clemson, but do you really need to post stuff like "here to watch my team get demolished"? I think our fans, maybe disproportionately, like to accentuate the negative - that way, if bad things happen, they can be happy that they were right, and if good things happen, they can (sort of) enjoy the good.

TS is right and we just don't want to hear it
I totally support Todd Stansbury & Paul Johnson.

Stansbury is right. Quit whining and realize we have problems that are harder to fix than "Derrr fire the coach".

I would be interested to hear TStan's thoughts on what the school (that's long been an impediment to athletic success) is or isn't doing to at least be appearing to work with the athletic dept instead of the public persona that the school remains "hostile" towards athletics. At the end of the day whether CPJ should be fired or not, a bigger issue going forward is whether the school is going to be supportive of athletics.

Does the athletic 2020 vision he references detail what the funds raised are going towards? I'm assuming it isn't paying off old bball coaches, current football coach and paying for everyone's dream coach.

By the definition of the word, he's creating excuses. Also, I did not say he is in over his head, but the more he defers to excuses, the more it appears that way.

I would rather be wrong about Taquon, our WRs who cant get separation in single coverage, our OL who cant block 4 old ladies and our fumbling bumbling stable of backs. I would rather be wrong and have wins and be happy than be a miserable cunt 4 games into the season. But yes we have a certain percentage who take pleasure in being right while the rest of us wallow in misery.

The other thing is that, while I know that this is a public forum, it's a little less annoying for people to vent and be negative here "in the family" than out on Facebook and the like. I don't personally have any Dwag fan Facebook friends, but a lot of these folks that I know do; I'll be damned if I'll give any Dwags the satisfaction of seeing me badmouth my own team.

Since you brought up the "bowl streak" - I totally don't understand the fascination some have with this.

In today's environment, if a team doesn't go to a bowl they are really, really bad. Going to just any bowl is not the goal of any decent program.

As for attendance to bowl games, when we went to a major bowl for the first time in 42 years our AD had to plead with us to buy more tickets. Homer Rice one time in a communication with fans said we had a bad rep with bowl reps on this issue. In 2016, after beating ugag, in a game located on the state border, we were called out by the bowl director for our poor fan support.

We have got issues, and this current coaching regime sets itself up to be ridiculed and to make it easy for potential customers to ignore us.
