Two tidbits

I think by firing a winning coach with a $ 4 million buy out, DRAD has made the statement we want to win BIG NOW!

Gailey did not have a $4m "buy out", and we won't pay him $4M. You can be sure that his claim will be settled for less.

I think by firing a winning coach with a $ 4 million buy out, DRAD has made the statement we want to win BIG NOW!

I think the statement that DRad made was "I can't sell a GT team coached by Chan Gailey." There are many reasons why this might be:

- not winning enough
- not beating UGA
- Chan not having an outgoing personality to help promote the program
- offense not exciting enough

And I'm sure there are many more.

A wise mentor of mine once said that in sales if you do not believe you have the right solution for a person's problems then there is no way you can convince THEM to believe you have the right solution. Extrapolating that to our situation; DRad didn't believe in what we have and since he needs to sell the program he needs to get someone in there to lead that he can believe in.

My point is that I think he's talking about more than just winning, not that you are mistaken in your read on things.

Bingo. WHoever you hire better win 9-10 games per year, including UGA, or DRAD is toast.

I disagree. DRad will not be toast by not accomplishing something that the program as a whole has reached only seven times in the last 50 years.

The program will however need to show improvement in areas that were deficient under CG --as Ish has mentioned. With improvement in the areas of the program that are directly related to the 'team' (player motivation, QB development, game prep, etc.), the wins will come --including 9 and 10, perhaps more on occasion.

Then couple with that the 'indirectly-related-to-the-team' areas where DRad as an administrator of GT athletics desires improvement --fan interest/passion, ticket sales, athletic budget (football is the driving force of that), marketing to the Atlanta area and perhaps beyond in the state, then DRad will have accomplished what he set out to do here.

We have to give the new guy at least a few years to get his program up and running. Next year might not be so pretty regardless of who the coach is.

thats actually what Chan was so good at. we woujld have won at least 7.

anyway, with the right treatment, i am hoping that Nesbitt can win the job and we go in with our strengths and see what we get. we typically do better as the underdog anyway

My point is that we just fired a coach with a winning record, who made a bowl appearance every year. Plus we paid him $ 4 MILLION ON THE WAY OUT! I would think DRAD would have to " shoot for the moon" to bring some guy in that has proven he can do it (has before), not someone we "hope" will do it. I don't think we can compete financially for Steve Spurrier or Urban Meyer, but Neuhisel fits the need perfectly and we could afford him. Every one else IMHO is unproven. I like Edsall, but still unproven in my mind- fair record, weak conference. Hatcher- great mind but young and unproven even at 1 AA. Everyone one else is a defensive coach- we already have a good one.
WE'RE NOT HIRING A DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR!!!!! I'm getting so tired of everybody taking this tact. Tenuta may be gone before the bowl for all we know if a big $$ school comes calling. And even if he decides to stay on with the new coach, that guy will not coach the D no matter what he's been doing up til now. We need th best coach we can find, no matter what his last position was. The OC is who is supposed to take care of scoring points.

Yeah, actually we will. You didn't listen to the press conference, did you?

Annuitize it (at worst), and give him the present day value of all payouts. Perhaps settle for less.

The problem with that argument is that he wasn't fired because of his win-loss record only. He was fired because his win-loss record did not show improvement and for many of the other reasons listed in this thread. The new coach will not be required to win 10 games next year to keep his job. He will be expected to motivate players, prepare them with appropriate game plans, and consistently improve over time.
