In regards to biggest game ever, like has been said that is UVA 1990. I know we won 3 other championships but I think pre- and post-TV is a legit dividing line.
We have already tied a #1 team (I think) when we sucked and used a TIGHT END at QB. That was ND at home 3-3 in 1981 I think. We ended 1-9-1.
This is only technically correct though - everybody knew Faust's teams were always overrated, UGAG this year is not.
only story on my front page is behind a paywall: https://www.nytimes.com/1981/06/30/sports/notre-dame-tied-georgia-tech-in-3-3-deadlock.html
The blurb on the search:
"Georgia Tech, despite having its worst season in 46 years, had one of the biggest days in its 89 years of football today when it ended Notre Dame's chances for a perfect season by achieving a 3-3..."
They tied us by the way, I think we were up 3-0 for awhile in the second half. I was there! I don't have trouble remembering the wins I saw since there were on 6 total in the 3 years I was there - without looking, probably our lousiest 3 year stretch ever.
