first play from scrimmage#42 goes unblocked to drop jt for a four yard loss.. This happened at bc too... PJ talks about how talented they are but any jacktard can go unblocked and tackle a qb that is just standing there "meshing".. What is supposed to happen on this play?

QB supposed to give to BB, who should get a yard or so as the DE is coming laterally while BB is heading to LOS.

The DE is being optioned. If the dude is that fast, you need to chip him to slow him down a step.

Depends on the play.

In the triple option, the DE is the first read.

So the DTs and MLB get blocked by G-C-G, the playside tackle blocks the OLB, and the playside DE is read.

If the DE goes for the QB, then the ball goes to the BB and he gets five or six yards before encountering the strong safety, who is hopefully worried about tackling the QB or the pitch guy, and the ball is 9 yards downfield when the BB meets the FS.

If the DE goes for the BB, then the QB pulls the ball out, runs around the DE who's busy tackling the wrong guy, and runs out with the trailing A back as his pitch man. The strong safety becomes the 2nd read. If he takes the QB, the ball is pitched. If he takes the pitch guy, the ball is kept. And again, the first defender a ball carrier encounters is the Free Safety.

Then if we're lucky enough, the defense is in man coverage and the corner ran himself out of the play chasing our WR, and our WR cracks the free safety, and it's an easy touchdown from anywhere on the field. Or we make one guy miss and it's a TD.

Everything I said might change depending on defensive alignment.

So yeah, that's how complicated our plays are. And when they work, hoooo boy do they look freaking cool. And when two guys öööö their assignments up, hooo boy do they look stupid.

You don't have to be that fast to get to the qb unblocked after a mesh read.. It renders the pitch worthless

With the way the offense is supposed to be run (and opposing coaches have long said what it is difficult to simulate is the speed at which the offense hits you), you better be pretty fast to get to the QB after the mesh. We've seen DEs make it appear as if they're taking the B back only to step out and take the QB. You better be mighty solid at DT and MLB to do that. And some of those folks have been.

Did you see the size differential between the Clemson DL and our OL guys?

We got spoiled with Dwyer trucking 2 or 3 defenders routinely. Our blocking was just as bad then, but it was masked by tough running.

THIS WAS NOT A BAD READ!!!

Either this was a power option where the BBack blocks no matter the read (which I believe is the play) or Mills messed up his path. Mills is outside of the mesh from the sky cam view. This would denote a power option. Mills was just a bit too outside to block. If he makes this block, JT has a clear path as DeVine and Marshall make their blocks.

All this JT nonsense is crazy. He is a good QB for GT.

JT did have some issues with driving the pitch option to commit. Clemson's game plan was to take the pitch and or split the pitch and depend on the LB to stop JT on the inside.

Thanks this seems like the best explanation

I have to say that it would be difficult for any QB to continue to run head-first at full clip into the OLB to "drive the option" when the likelihood is that he will get creamed bc the block was weak

Itll get better. Again, it seems it was a freshmen not totally being in the right spot. We just have to hope they keep growing week to week.

You're not understanding.

On the triple option play... ...if the DE takes the QB then the read is to hand off to the BB, and the pitch never happens anyway. If everyone does their job it's a guaranteed 5 yards minimum when the DE takes the QB on the triple.

It wasn't a TO though it was power option apparently

Another thing to consider is that other people missing blocks makes the decision a little more complicated. If the DT's are destroying our G-C-G, it's understandable being hesitant to give it to the BB. Same goes for the outside. We had multiple plays where everything set up perfectly but then our playside AB got punked by a Clemson safety causing JT to eat the ball and lose a yard rather than gaining 10+.

Maybe we should try calling more plays that don't require 8 perfectly executed blocks to be successful. Maybe some zone blocked dives like the second half. Get our linemen firing out for a while.
