Georgia Tech’s game at the University of Central Florida was still scheduled to be played this Saturday as of Sunday.

While Tech’s campus will be closed on Monday and Tuesday due to the anticipated heavy winds and rainfall from Hurricane Irma, the team planned to practice and prepare for UCF. Teams that are in season are permitted to continue practicing on campus, so long as conditions remain safe. UCF’s campus has been closed through Wednesday.

Tech athletic department officials have been in contact with counterparts at UCF and are monitoring the situation. As of Sunday, the plan for Tech was to fly to Orlando, Fla., where UCF is located, on Friday and play at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

There would not be any need to make a decision to cancel or postpone the game until later in the week. UCF and Memphis were to play this past Friday in Orlando, but the teams made the decision to cancel their game that morning.

As of Sunday afternoon, only one game scheduled for next week, Miami at Florida State, had been changed because of the hurricane.

That game has been moved to October 7. Tech’s game against Miami, originally scheduled for October 12, has been pushed back to Oct. 14 as a result.

A team spokesman was not aware if the possibility of moving the Tech-UCF game to Atlanta had been broached. The teams have a two-game home-and-home series, with the game at Tech contracted for 2020.

Moving the Tech-UCF game would be a considerable logistical challenge, as the Yellow Jackets and Knights do not share open dates.

(Just pasted the whole thing, I'll take it down if the AJC requests.)

Can't go 6-6 if you don't play 12 games.

Because they don't have the travel expenses in their budget.

If that is the case, we could just pay for their travel instead of traveling ourselves.

That is a pretty smart idea except that they would lose yet another practice day so probably wouldn't go for it.

Week off before Pitt and a week off before Miami. Get legs back under the OL

Irma was pretty weakened by the time it made it up to central FL. I can't see why this game would get cancelled unless it was just too hard for UCF to practice/prepare for this game. I'm pretty sure we're one of their marquee home games on the schedule so they wont want to cancel it if they don't have to.

It's not necessarily all about damage to Orlando/UCF though. They're going to take into consideration concession supplies or security personnel for example. If those things are needed elsewhere in the state at a high demand, they're likely to cancel.
