Disgustingly so.

Most people have them in the top 10, but they're probably a fringe top-20 team at best.

I'd put them anywhere from 15-20. Somewhere in there. Definitely not top 5 though. I cant wait to stomp their ass this year. Taylor is overrated. They act like he is the second coming of Vick. I mean, Duke had them up against the ropes there in their last regular season game.

Meh, I can see why they're rated as highly as they are, even if I disagree. They're the ACC champs, managed to win a bowl game, return some players that won that bowl game last year, and always manage to somehow luck out.

This doesn't mean I think they're any good. They lost their best defensive player, and at no time last season did they seem to be making progress. And neither team looked good in the Orange Bowl, VPISU just stunk less. But, the going story in college football right now is that VPISU is a good team, and this will be parroted ad nauseum by until they begin losing games they should win.

I don't think they should be top 5, but then again, I don't think they should have polls until the teams have played a few weeks. Its all bogus. If I had to, I'd have them between 12-18.

I have felt that way about them for almost a decade, and they still continue to find ways to win on trash.

Until they actually underperform, it's hard to pick against them.

I feel like at least one ACC team should be top ten. They won the ACC last year and bring everyone back, so why not them? I have no problem with it. Mostly I am glad there's an ACC team that high this early, and that it's not us.

However, the one factor you must consider is what I call the "Big Game/Big Ratings Factor" which is basically that the media wants hype up Bama/VT game and the best way to do so is to put them both in the top 10. Even more so to make the big name team (i.e. Bama) the underdog.

The tactics are very common as the season progresses.

You're right. I hate them, but they win. You have to give it to them even though they suck b hole.

It probably has something to do with the number of ACC championships they've won since joining the conference, compared to every other school in the conference.

They've performed well nearly every year. No one else has had the same level of success.

They return a ton of people. So do we. They won last year.

I do not think VT is underrated, but I'm not convinced they are overrated.

A great season in my book is 1) winning your conference; and 2) beating your rival. VT has had several of those recently.

Cannot argue with VT and a high ranking.

They've won at least 10 games in each of their five seasons in the ACC, they've won three ACC championships, lost an ACC championship game to FSU, and finished second in the Coastal when GT won it.

I think it all depends on what you expect of the rankings. If you expect it to be a measure of a teams current ability relative to the other teams on that list...well, that's your problem. The rankings are mostly a combination of what people think a team is going to do and where they "feel" a team should be. By that I mean say someone "feels" California should be at, say, 12th on the list. Then they start putting the rest of the teams in. They don't care if it doesn't make sense later.

It appears (from reading comments on some of the ESPN ACC Blog posts) that VT visited with UGA to swap notes: VT to get info on how to beat 'Bama, UGA to get info on how to beat us.

Laughable. :laugher:

I have trouble to believe that. I give Beamer a little more credit than to go looking for help on beating Bama from a team that was down 31-0 at half time!

More likely VPI was looking to find out how to do the odd thing known as a successful forward pass and UGAg was asking about how to make their defense not be wimps.

It really says a lot about the coaching staff up there. There are so many games over the last decade that they should have lost, but somehow they pulled it out. The ranking may be a little high, but its all a crapshoot, they've got talented kids, a coaching staff who's core seems to have been together forever now, and they've got just as good of a shot as anyone else.

Chance favors the prepared.

Not so much.

In fact, this quote from Wiles sums up what many have said on this board and others when people are talking about schemes to beat GT.

They’re really good, and if they don’t turn it over, they are going to be tough to stop.”
