We lose another one

There is nothing to fear....all is well! The time of tempered expectations and momentous disappointment is over. We got what may have been the best coach available and maybe the best fit for GT. Everyone knows it whether its the AJC, Dawg Fans, GSU fans, etc. 8 wins no problem with a max at 10 - there hasn't been positive excitement like this in many years. Go Jackets!

Max at 10? Max is 14.

Joe D wasn't an impressive coach to me. He did better though than i thought he would, but he taught some bs oline schemes to cover up the fact that our line wasn't a strength.

well, BOR, you have to admit we shuffled more lineman than a casino dealer at times dealing with injuries. and while we have had a hard-working group, i wouldnt say that they have been a strength from the perspective of where we have landed players. LBs and RBs we seem to be able to pluck em, but OL has been more difficult. Think of all the "calvin" type OLs we have ALMOST had over the years...

i think Coach D has some skillz, and i think his resume shows that others think the same. not to say that he was the best fit for GT...

Casino dealers dont shuffle linemen.

Will all of these defections free up scholarships for walkons that are deserving? (directed to dejackets)

The mostr obvious problem with Coach D and in turn Gailey, was they didn't play the best guys. This was the most evident on the oline.

...

It'll sting for a bit but we'll be so much further ahead of where we were at the end of Ross' 1st year. It may in fact be time for me to rachet down my hopes for this year a notch or two. This transition is looking tougher than I thought....

I was thinking the same thing. We're going to struggle this year with this new offense, our D will win some games for us, and then we'll start getting better.

The weird thing is that everyone thought Dunmon should be playing more last year! Now he gets the shot and he transfers.

Exactly what I was thinking. I guess most of Gailey's players were bigger pussies than we thought.

what is a "Gailey player?" Is Calvin a Gailey player? or Brooks?

that being said these growing pains are normal. PJ has a certain type of lineman that fits his style. We will have the same amount of NFL lineman as usual. PJ has put a Navy lineman in the NFL.

I am surprised at all the attacks. These growing pains are VERY NORMAL and just part of the process. Lineman will not be the reason we win or lose this year.

I actually agree with you for once law_bee.

I think the TEAM will be better off without some of those who transferred around.

I think it often is a "me vs we" thing.

I don't blame Johnson one bit. He has been through some horrible injuries and I think he made a mature decision for his future.

Bennett? NOBODY as good as GT offered him. He didn't produce and if ccg was still here, TB would still be the starter and nobody would have ever taken his job.

He had a chance to be a productive member of the team in other ways and he left his teammates. Good riddance.

Those that remain will be winners.

You're right on point number one. You're wrong on point number two. He wanted to play year four. If CPJ picked the right players, he wouldn't have. Bennett has no business in the option offense.

While I hate the fact that I feel our offense lacked partly due to his inability to perform, I respect his decision to do what is best for him.

Agreed. He freed up a scholarship spot willingly for CPJ. That is being a team player IMO.

i think that Nesbitt was going to be the QB this year if Gailey was still here. you could kinda tell thate he gave up on Bennett by about midway through the year. it is kinda funny to me that people freaked out and blamed Gailey for not putting in Bennett in RBs senior year, and then the next year supposedly Gailey is married to Bennett. you guys are too smart for your own good!

Well we can all agree that many of Gailey's teams were soft. At least softer than most other teams.

I think CPJ said it best: We weren't mentally tough.

I think CPJ said it best: We weren't mentally tough.
I think mental toughness starts at the top. It seems to me that the best coaches we have had over the last several decades have also been the toughest mentally.

And I don't think its a tough call to say that CPJ is one of the toughest ones we have ever had. That will take time to trickle down but it will eventually.

And, speaking for myself, that was the primary contradiction with Gailey. I think he was a brilliant coach but just didn't give a damn about a lot of things that are neccessary to building teams and programs that refuse to accept defeat under any circumstances.

I don't think many if any fans, players, writers, etc. would disagree that a primary characteristic of CPJ's teams over his career has been a deeply ingrained attitude that no sacrifice will be spared in the name of winning.

You could almost see it in Gailey's teams - they would get to a point where they would just accept the fact that they were going to lose and start mailing it in. And Gailey's reluctance to demote starters just made it exponentially worse.

I wasn't happy or sad to see Gailey fired but now that he's gone I feel 100 times better about our program under CPJ - notwithstanding the growing pains, painful adjustments, awkward transitions and attrition. As people a lot tougher than me point out, pain is just weakness leaving your body.

I have a hunch that the CPJ regime will either have the type of success that will draw national attention (playing on the heart strings of the nostalgic olden days) or "the system" will be a total disaster that empty the cupboard of "NFL type" players and that will set the program back 10 years.

We can only hope and prey for the former because if it is the latter we will return to the world of 2 win seasons.
