What are the REAL reasons our football program can't compete?

Sorry, but Kirby is a better coach than Johnson. There is more to coaching than just X’s and O’s. I think the problem that many fans have is they are using the old mindset as someone just mentioned about “take theirs and beat yours and take yours and beat theirs”. Those days are long gone. Being a good coach the last 20 years includes hundreds of things to build a program. Kirby has excelled at those way beyond any coach GT has had recently. Things such as 1) Admin buy in, 2) Raising money and building a network of bagmen, 3) Nationwide recruiting, 4) Luring high end assistants 5) Filling stadiums, etc.

Now, do I believe Johnson is a better X’s and O’s coach than Kirby. Yes I do. But X’s and O’s are probably 5th or 6th on the list of things a successful coach has to be good at in todays game. Kirby just ended a 40 year drought and beat the dynasty to do it. He built them up doing all the small things just like we all saw Dabo do and Riley will do at USC. That is now how coaches are judged. No one cares if you are a savant game day coach and win 6-7 games and aren’t ranked. Johnson was a game day savant in my opinion but he lacked in so many other areas that it didn’t really matter outside a handful of seasons.

What has our coach done since our last game to build the program? I know Kirby was all over South Georgia at many high schools and meeting many money guys. Has Collins been doing those things that ultimately lead to success? He has had 3 years so we should have started seeing these things start to payoff, but we haven’t. That tells me the hundreds of other coaching duties aren’t being handled. GT is doing the minimum to field a team. Recruit Atlanta, rotate thru assistants, no bagmen, no admin buy in, etc. Would our coach ever sit a higher ranked QB for a walk on?
That's because Kirby understands that recruiting is the #1 priority

The true #1 priority is having the entire machine of the University pulling in the same direction and wanting to win. That leads to money, eligibility, bagmen and that ultimately leads to recruiting, ie. players like Bowers going 3,000 miles from home to play for a team. It’s also how you can have multiple 5 star players at the same position. We currently fall in the large percentage of programs just going thru the motions of recruiting locally, building some hype, and being .500. Unfortunately, when our coach is a solid game day guy we are a little over .500 and when our coach has little game day acumen we are a little (or lot) below .500.

In my opinion, the main thing that sets coaches like KIrby Smart and Nick Saban apart is depth. Their teams' second string is as talented as their first string. Therefore, they can play at the highest level with fresh players throughout the game. For teams like Tech, that's a major disadvantage! Even when we have had really good teams it has been extremely hard to beat such schools. Fortunately, most teams lack the amount of talent and depth Smart and Saban currently have.

Obviously, Nick Saban is a great coach, but what Kirby learned the most from him is to amass as much depth as possible, especially on the defensive side of the ball. That's why teams like the GA Bullfrogs and Bama have NO excuse not to be great every year.

GO JACKETS!

You know I’m a huge fan of Johnson. Have been since the Southern days. Hence, my handle. My two biggest disappointments in my sports fandom are 1) GT’s inability to capitalize on the natty season and build a perennial program like Bowden did at FSU and 2) Johnson’s inability to sell his vision of offense to see it really succeed at a school that could bring in high end players.

Sorry, but Kirby could switch to the option tomorrow and he’d still win and UGA fans would eat it up and recruits would keep coming. Why? Because he would sell it and he wouldn’t cede the top players as “out of reach”. Gunner Stockton would be an incredible option QB like Frazier was. Sorry that some of you don’t understand what makes a coach successful. I actually believe Collins could be a decent coach if he simply stayed out of the way on game days. That may seem odd but if he truly knew his strengths and weaknesses he would be smart enough to spend his time doing those things he is good at and delegating those things he clearly is not good at. Maybe he will this season.

Maybe a bit of a tangent to focus on this part, but game day stuff isn't the only issue. Dude has yet to show he's learned to hold people accountable for failure (e.g. Thacker seemingly still having the same job). I'm not sure that's something a head coach can really delegate. There's also that question of whether he runs practices in a way that is useful but that's more of an unknown.

Could it not be simply said that Paul could have won multiple Nattys with Ugags talent? Not sure I can agree about CGC coaching talent, but i guess we will see what has changed come September.

That’s my point about Johnson. He never sold his system (which I love) and never tweaked it enough (which I was praying for) to put himself in a position to get a job like Bama or UGA. He also never showed the “want to” of recruiting that the big boy teams require of a coach. So while we all can ponder the what ifs, Johnson had his career to get hired by a team with zero academic standards who could draw 5 stars. And it never happened so that’s on him. Kirby and Saban both could have played it safe as well and gone to a school where 7-8 wins are all that was required or to an academy where recruiting is limited. But they took a shot with their career and they got it done.

Now do I believe if Kirby died in December could a guy like Johnson be hired on the spot and win a game? Sure. But that’s not coaching. Coaching is running the entire program not just calling 70 plays on a Saturday afternoon. Heck, I think a lot of humans could take over UGA for a game and win a game.
