What if Chan is back next year?

After last night's public embarrasment (for those of you who went to the game you should see the ESPN telecast) I think this is inconceivable, unless all of a sudden we unleash a dynamic offense juggernaut and roll over everyone we play while picking up a handful of blue-chip recruits.

Here is a very realistic scenario. DRad decides to do nothing because he is taking the LSU AD job in January when it opens up. Which throws us into chaos trying to find another AD and then allow him to deal with Chan which obviously wouldn't happen until next season.

The above is my guess as to what happens, unless Chan resigns which I honestly think is a possibility at seasons end.

Resign...no....he is guaranteed $4.4 million if we fire him. Why would he resign?

DRAD....you never know....but he told me personally he had no interest in the job. I asked when he stopped by my tailgate a few weeks ago. It wasn't a politician's answer either. He told me no, he wasn't interested and would not be a candidate. He then went on to talk about several of the things he has working here. Also, if you noticed he planted the first seed to the fan base in the Good Word several weeks ago leaving ISP in three years. If he had any thoughts about the LSU job, I don't think he would be so heavily involved in long term planning.

I'm tired of seeing his dull, non involved persona on the sideline
so I just won't watch the guys play if he returns

Dan will be here.
Of course he's going to tell you that. It would be stupid of him to represent anything else. But if you think its not a real scenario, then you're not thinking clearly.

I hope to God he stays, but LSU WILL interview him, and he WILL be up for consideration of that job, and he more than likely WILL be their top candidate. Now whether it all works out or not is debatable.

Because I think Chan is willing to take less money to get out of his contract and resign. I wasn't suggesting that he will just come forward and resign. I think he will resign once they make him an offer to leave.

From numerous conversations about the topic, I say no. From the way it sounds he will not even be interviewing. They will try to talk to him, I don't think he will even interview though. Baton Rouge or Atlanta? His family is happy here.

Let's see . I get $4.4 million if I'm fired, but I'm willing to take less money and resign........I'm sorry, but I'm missing the logic here. He's been fired before. It's part of what being a coach for a living is. He's not going to resign to "save face". The offer to leave is written in his contract. It says pay me what you owe me in equal monthly installments until the end of the contract

I don't think Gailey could take another coaching job without working out a buyout of some sort. That is why we would likely get some sort of reduction. His pay would probably by the salary of any new position he chose to take.

Is he really guaranteed $4.4 million? I assumed part of the incentive package was not guaranteed? Why do we have to pay it? i mean O'l didn't have to pay us? It seems like it should go both ways.

True Mook, but Chan also is responsible to make appearances, radio shows, etc. etc. etc. which frankly are a pain in any coaches ass. I imagine that with any contract, there is a little give and take. If I'm Chan, I'd take less money to leave and take another opportunity that can pay him other $ that would enable him to make MORE, than have to fulfill my contractual duty and make less.

If we fire him he could pocket $4.4 and leave town.
Or we could pay him $3 mil and resign or "take a new job" and take his show on the road.
Or we could keep him in his $1 million job.

Buyouts for less money happen all the time.

Read the contract. Just google Chan Gailey contract. It's very specific about what is owed.

If we still have Chan as a coach I will still watch games / pull for our team / sing the ramblin wreck / etc, but I won't really have any sort of umm, hope. My hope has been dashed, for the first time since I was in undergrad in the mid 90s.

well written and way too close to home. I feel u 100%, but I didn't go to Tech. other than that, i felt u

I told a buddy of mine last nite that right now when I watch GT football, I just don't have a lot of confidence in what we can do. I still support, but it's hoping for something rather than thinking we have a good chance at something.

Here is a more entertaining and likely scenario.

What if the United States changed its currency from the dollar to my poop?

We could then payout Gailey's remaining compensation in equal monthly installments of my poop.

Then simply by keeping me well fed on diet rich in fiber and baked beans, we could afford to bring in any HC that we wanted.

We would literally have money coming out of our asses or more specifically my ass.

I know this is unlikely to happen, but as long as we are throwing a bunch crazy scenarios out there I think we should cover all the bases.

JT, it's stingtalk, it's okay to type 'ass.'

And yeah, great idea. I'm all for debasing our national currency to JT's Poop, actually. Might be able to solve the Chan issue as well as Social Security Solvency at the same time.

beej67,
would like to invest in JT's poop, please

From what I remember hearing before, the buyout would be far less than 3 million. The buyout's essentially free money for Chan if his next job makes as much as he does here and that's why it really wouldn't be all that much for Tech.

There's one other complication: what about the buyouts for the assistant coaches? I know that with Tenn., firing Fulmer would cost something like 5 million with his long contract and the long contracts of his highly paid staff.

I believe that most assistant coaches have 1 year contracts that get renewed each year.

If? I believe it is a certainty that he has one more year--maybe on double secret probation, but three things are in play. The buy-out is too painful; he's probably going to get bowl eligible; and we need a full year to do a comprehensive hard target search for the right coach. The man that we want, and the man that wants us. No snap decisions--ala the Lewis hire. The coaching carousel is going to be in full swing after this year with several better jobs coming available for the quality coaches.
That having been said, if Gailey jumps to the NFL the buyout is solved and things accelerate.
Just one dumb guy's opinion.

Yeah, the resignation thing has crossed my mind. He sounded pretty weary in that interview. I could see him negotiating a partial buyout, head for the house for R & R and after a year of rest, try to land an NFL job.
