What if Chan is back next year?

Would someone please enlighten me? Why does the university recently renew his contract just to turn right around and fire him? I'm just an engineer and having a little trouble understanding this high-powered financial management decision. :o

A parting gift from Dave Braine. When Braine found out we were being placed on probabation he gave Chan a new contract, The contract had a clause in it that extended if Tech went to the ACC championship game. It is a quandry for Radokovich, as I fairly certain that he does not believe Chan can get the football program where he thinks it should be.

Thanks 83. Was this strictly a unilateral decision by Braine to extend the contract. Did it not require the approval of other Tech administrators or managers? My basic question is: are the high level administrators at Tech happy with the direction the program is going, at least enough to justify re-inking the contract. Hope this question makes sense.

Required the approval of the athletic board

Which is chaired by Wayne Clough the president of GT. I am guessing they felt like with Tech going on probation they needed to extend Gailey's contract as it would be difficult to hire a coach on probation. In my opinion, the only high level administrator other than the Radokovich (athletic director) at Tech that matters is Dr. Clough. I am not sure how concerned Dr. Clough is about winning in a big way. I suspect he is more concerned about graduation rates and running a clean program than winning in a big way. In my opinion, Dr. Clough will only get concerned if alumni are withholding large donations to the school until the state of the football program is addressed. IMO, I don't think the GT administration thinks athletics are very important to the mission of the school. Its basically been that way since Coach Dodd retired.

Helps recruiting.

Makes sense. The only part that does not make sense to me is all the talk of firing Gailey within a year of renewing his contract. The financial buyout, based on the numbers I've seen thrown around on the board, is huge. Also, with a new AD coming in, it just makes sense to me to not hamstring him by a longterm lock-in of a head coach prior to his arrival.

I guess what I'm saying is that Dr. Clough must be fundamentally satisfied with the current state of sports at Tech. I originally came to Tech when Drs. Petit and Crecine were around and I never believed that our sports programs were high priority with them. Oh well - Go Tech!

Not quite that simple....

If Radokovich believes that Chan is not the guy, he needs to fire him this year or at the least after next season. You can't just let Chan finish out his contract or he becomes a lame duck which would make it very hard to recruit. The one thing Dr. Clough does respond to is when large donors withhold money.
