What is it about Whisenhunt?

Why Not Ken?

  • Poor Record as a HC

  • Minimal College Experience

  • Chan Flashbacks

  • Moving From CA So Probably Liberal

  • Runs Pro-Style Offense

  • Too Old-School

  • Not Vad Lee

What do you not like about him?

I can't stand the thought of him coaching at Tech, but I am honestly pleasantly surprised that most everybody else feels the same way. So, why?

The main thing for me, I think, is that I don't think his offense is sustainable here. This isn't Alabama.

1. College is very different. Recruiting is non-existent in pros. Motivation is tougher and practice hours are far less.

2. He wasn't even that successfulin the pros. At best, he isn't distinguished from any other NFL OC.

I share the concerns about recruiting. Your second statement is highly debatable. He's regularly regarded as in the top 1/4 of NFL OCs.

3. Ken Whisenhunt – L.A. Chargers

Ken Whisenhunt has a reputation for turning offenses around. He led the Arizona Cardinals to their only Super Bowl appearance in 2008 and was helpful in quarterback Kurt Warner‘s late-career resurgence. Whisenhunt became the Chargers OC in 2013 and they had a top 5 finish in total yards. That season earned Whisenhunt Assistant Coach of the Year, as well as giving Philip Rivers Comeback Player of the Year.

The bigger problem is that being a good NFL OC doesn't really provide an indicator one way or the other as to how he'd fare as a college head coach.

I don’t get it either. He has taken a laughing-stock team in the Chargers and a terrible QB into one of the top 5 offenses in the league.

I agree, I’d rather have someone younger and more exciting. But, I wouldn’t be disappointed with Whisenhunt.

Do you think he would work for $1 a year like the POTUS because of his JacketHeart and use the rest of the funds on assistants?

For me, it is what another poster said. Who would start a search for head coach at Tech by targeting an NFL offensive coordinator like KW or Norv Turner or Todd Haley? Whisenhunt's only qualification is that once upon a time he went to Tech. And we have good evidence that being an alum isn't that great when it comes to coaches. He's one of just 32 PRO coordinators, so he isn't a box of rocks, but he's not a college coach/recruiter, either.

This is fair, and why he's at the bottom of my list among the three names getting the most attention right now. I won't be distraught if he's hired, but will be very disappointed if it comes to light that he was the only name seriously considered.

We can add "Take a Whizz" to our lexicon if we hire him.

"We took a Whizz on VPI yesterday".
"We're gonna take a Whizz on the mutts on Saturday"

that's all I got. :bfd::eekfacepalm:

I’m fine with or without him. I think most see him as another Chan. I wasn’t a Chan guy but his winning percentage at Tech is almost the same as Johnson’s and 2 of Johnson’s best 4 seasons were with Chan’s players. Chan had a staff that finally put together a great recruiting class that Johnson took to an ACC Championship and Orange Bowl. I actually thought KW would have been a good selection when we hired CPJ because we had studs lined up.

I don't know if Whisenhunt would be a good coach here or not, but Matt Leinart just sounds like a little bitch. He sounded like one after USC lost to Texas, as well, but I sorta chalked that up to the emotions of the moment and him being a young guy at the time. Clearly he's just a bitch.
