What is it about Whisenhunt?

Why Not Ken?

  • Poor Record as a HC

  • Minimal College Experience

  • Chan Flashbacks

  • Moving From CA So Probably Liberal

  • Runs Pro-Style Offense

  • Too Old-School

  • Not Vad Lee

I don't know if Whisenhunt would be a good coach here or not, but Matt Leinart just sounds like a little bitch. He sounded like one after USC lost to Texas, as well, but I sorta chalked that up to the emotions of the moment and him being a young guy at the time. Clearly he's just a bitch.
So is Cowherd

Actually his record as a HC does not bother me. Too many variables involved for that to be an overriding factor.

Slightly concerned about age, but not much.

Very concerned regarding lack of recruiting history.

Afraid he might be hired for exactly the wrong reason - "tech man."

I want a coach that at least WANTS to win a national championship at GT. If not, no need to play.

And Philip Rivers was one of the worst QBs in the league before this season

I wouldn't say that, but Rivers has had arguably his two best seasons under Whisenhunt. Anyone trying to marginalize Whisenhunt's worth as an NFL coach is mistaken, but there are legitimate concerns as to how he'd translate to the college game. I still won't be butthurt if it happens, provided there's a legitimate search process in place.

To me, it's firstly the head coaching record. Winning is winning. I don't buy that the NFL is any more competitive than college. So there's no reason to expect he'd do any better than mediocre in college.

He's also from Disgusta

Obviously the Patriots should dump Belichick for one of the many college coaches with better records as a head coach. Winning is winning.

Obviously you don't compare records straight up between college and pro. There are fewer cupcakes on the schedule in NFL, and they play more games. Going 13-3 in the NFL is like going 11-1 in college. Going 5-11 is like going 5-7 or 4-8

Whisenhunt's NFL records translate to Chan-like mediocre college records.

And obviously in college you get to recruit your own players, whereas in the NFL you're pretty much stuck with the hand you're dealt and only have as much input in the drafting and free agency process as your front office allows you. Even Bill Parcells was known to complain about not having enough say in player personnel matters.

That's not an endorsement of Whisenhunt as a head coaching candidate for our job, but just the reality that college and pro are different animals. Belichick flamed out with the Browns before getting another chance with a better-run organization.

Ben was 52TD/43INT in 3 seasons with Ken; 32TD and 11 INT the year after Ken left.

Rivers has been borderline HOF for years despite your perception.

Warner obviously a legend.

Maybe Ken developed Ben's breakout year, but he certainly wasn't calling the plays when it actually occurred.

He failed with Leinart.

I'm willing to say the Titans disaster wasn't his fault and he wasn't given a fair shake there.

I just don't think it's the right fit.

Warner obviously a legend.

In the late 90s-early 2000s, sure. He was garbage from 2002-2006, totally 27 TDs and 30 INTs in 31 starts with the Rams, Giants, and Cardinals.

In Ken's first year, Warner threw for 27 TDs in 11 starts. Then 30 in 2008 and 26 in 2009.

He failed with Leinart.

This would only make sense if Leinart went on to have great success under another coach or organization. I.e. you can say that Jerry Glanville failed with Brett Favre.

Rivers has been borderline HOF for years despite your perception.

Rivers' two best passer rating seasons have come with Whisenhunt as OC (okay, technically he has one other season with the same 105.5 rating he had under Whiz in 2013). In the last eight years, Rivers has posted a QB rating of 95+ three times (2013, 2017, 2018). Whisenhunt was the OC all three times.

I just don't think it's the right fit.

You may be right on this, but it's not for a lack of production from the QB position.

Negative fan reaction is unwarranted. If this is who our AD believes can get the job done, why on earth not get behind this and support him? He would be an interesting hire given his NFL experience and little college coaching experience.

I guess his lack of college experience doesn't really bother me. I just see him as a Chan 2.o, that was the one poll option that stuck out to me.

I don’t like Whisenhunt because we are throwing away an opportunity at actually making something for the sake of not sticking out. We have an identity. We can run with it. But no we would rather try to play the same way as everyone else and just believe we can get enough smooth talkers to win some recruits over. To me that is setting our ceiling at a lower level than we can get by being bold and different. There is nothing innovative about a professional coach coming in and just trying to outrecruut the 5 schools around us who have competed for a national title within the last decade. It’s just a desire to not be seen as doing things the wrong way because we are different. Or higher ups don’t have the balls to fully buy into being an option program. Which is sad because I think we could be great with the right amount of belief from the whole university family. It’s actually really sad to me that we have a bunch of people who think the same way. I don’t know if it’s ego, inflexibility, or some sensitivity to being given perceived as less talented but there is something personal to these folks about getting away from the option. I think if we focus on dispelling myths about defensive recruits and the offense we could really start to make headway but we would rather throw it all away I guess. I mean we all saw how close we were to actually competing for a national title in both 2009 and 2014. A couple more bounces and we are there. We just need the right QB. Wearent going to get that close running things the way a pro coach would run them in todays college football environment. Things are vastly different now vs 1990. Some people can’t seem to accept that.

I don’t get it either. He has taken a laughing-stock team in the Chargers and a terrible QB into one of the top 5 offenses in the league.

I agree, I’d rather have someone younger and more exciting. But, I wouldn’t be disappointed with Whisenhunt.

Philip Rivers is a terrible QB?

Projection is strong with this post.
