Which begs the question: what university or occupation is known for producing people with great humility?
I know where you are coming from. I too am a life-long Tech fan (season tickets with my dad since I was in middle school) who went to the school, and I don't have the same passion towards the school that I do for the teams. I wouldn't say I hate the school, but I am ambivalent towards it to a degree. I really thought about transferring to a smaller local school during my first year--maybe I was just being a homebody, but I didn't enjoy being there. However, I seemed to enjoy it more when I got into my major (textile chem) --didn't like my major (ended up going to med school), but I liked the people in my major. I am somewhat proud that I made it through there, but I don't gloat about going there around non-Tech folks (even UGA folks).I am probably one of the few exceptions to this rule. I grew up a lifelong Tech fan and graduated from Tech. I love the teams and hate the school.
If my kids want to go to Tech, fine, but I am not going to push them there, particularly if they want to do something that Tech doesn't offer. There is no way I want my kids attending Tech for the reasons pointed out on this board. Most of us (amd I did say us) are prideful, cocky and arrogant. I would prefer that my kids matriculate in a more well rounded environment that still produces fine graduates.
AMEN! :biggthumpup:That said, if my kids want to go to uga (sorry, I can not capitalize their initials) they had better get a freaking job because my money will NOT be spent in athens.
Even if some of the (older) alumni at the stadium do not cheer (every play, 3rd down, etc.), they are still the ones cutting the vast majority of the checks to the school and the AA.
So the support is there. Just because they did not start drinking at 8 am like you did does not make them less of a fan. Both types are needed.
I am one of those who you described.
If my son or daughter ever wanted to attend UGA, then I wouldn't have a song or daughter.

A true Tech man bust be a graduate of the Institute. (Sorry, Bobby Dodd, you're out!)
A true Tech man must represent the Institute with class and dignity at all times. (Sorry, Joe Hamilton, you're out!)
A true Tech man must cheer at the appropriate times and at an appropriate volume, and must know what is appropriate without asking. (Sorry.... err... me.)
A true Tech man must wear the proper color and must support the wearing of football uniforms that are the proper color and must know without asking what the proper color is. (Sorry at least 75% of fans, you're out!)
A true Tech fan must never drink Pepsi.
A true Tech fan must drink whiskey before games but must never act like he has. (You know who you are.)
A true Tech fan must have mixed feelings about Bill Curry. (Sorry, Bill Curry, you're out!)
etc.
#1 is the most ridiculous thing that I've ever heard of. I didn't go to Tech (although I was accepted), and I'd bet my damn paycheck that I'm more of a True Tech Fan than you are.
It's idiots like you that makes other people who aren't fans give us a bad name.
Freakin' dumbsh#$

Actually I believe it's idiots like you who give non-alumni fans(or Tech fans in general[or the human race in general...]) a bad name*.

A fan becomes a fan of a college football team for many reasons. Obviously, being an Alum is probably the biggest reason ..... but what about during your pre-collegiate days???
Some become fans due to academics, some due to location, some due to other relationships (parents are Alums, friends or family attend/attended) associated with the institution, etc. etc.
I reside in Central GA and grew up as a Tech fan. As old as I am ..... if you were from GA and was a college football fan ..... you either pulled for the Ga or GaTech. My decision was easy.
I played football and coached at GaSouthern. I now have even more reason to be a Tech fan .... my relationship with PJ, Mike Sewak, and Giff Smith from the GASouthern days.
Of course, Tech picked up a lot of South GA fans when Johnson and Staff became the HC. Does this mean I am not a GaSouthern fan? Of course not!!! I will pull for GaTech in all games, unless the Jackets play my GaSouthern Eagles ..... then of course I've got to pull for my Eagles.
Now I bring up another question ..... Is it acceptable to be a fan of multiple college teams??? It would be difficult to be a true fan if the 2 teams were in the same conference, but I am talking about different conferences and/or different divisions. Do you follow Ga HS Football and have fans at the A, AA, AAA, AAAA, and AAAAA levels?

And I am a fan of Tech, Missouri, Guilford College, LaGrange College and Mercer (all schools I attended at one time or another).
58 Posts into this thread and I still don't get it.
The very idea that the single question: What is your opinion about fans who didn't go to GT can generate 58 posts is... well... not encouraging.
First of all, let's start with the embedded premise: What is "your"...
Who is "your?"
You can learn a lot from a pronoun and what I learn from this one is that the person posing the question thinks of him/herself as on outsider.
So let me just cut to the chase. If you support the team then you are a Tech fan. Going to Tech does NOT make one a Tech fan. Not going to Tech does not prevent one from being a Tech fan.
The ONLY measure of a Tech fan is how much you hurt when we lose and how good you feel when we win.
Everything else is bull$•••.
