Whats your expectations after seeing T-Day?

Food for thought...these numbers are interesting
Assuming the defense is about as good as last year or even say its a bit worse... We gave up 20.8 ppg. Assume at worst we give up around 25 ppg. We only scored 26.2.

In CPJ's first year his team scored 24.2 ppg. They gave up 36.3 leading to a 2-10 record. The following they scored 30.5 and gave up 21.7 on the way to 8-5.

I didn't feel like looking/calculating all the stats for 04-07. Point is this offense will put points on the board even early on and assuming similar defensive numbers as last year with getting torched by BC theres not so much to fear. Sure they went 2-10 his first year at Navy but the numbers don't lie, it was more defensive issues.

Hope for the best; expect the worst

I am fully prepared for us to struggle this season getting accustomed to the new offense.

Those who point out what happened at Navy and how we have better athletes than Navy are not giving Navy's players enough credit. We have better athletes than Navy, but I doubt we will execute the offense with as much precision as Navy did, at least in the early going.

Maybe everything clicks early in the season and we have a juggernaut of an offense. I hope so. But I think it is more likely we will see fumbles and missed assignments continuing well into the season. It may take awhile to find a starting lineup that works.

Yeah, you can't judge too much by spring practice, but I was braced for a down season even if Gailey's replacement had not brought such a drastically different system.

I think it will be worth it in the long run, but it is foolish in my opinion to have unrealistic expectations for our first year in a brand new offense.

As long as we improve throughout the year and end well I will be satisfied regardles of the record.

CPJ's first Navy team won 2 more games than the previous season. Are you suggesting our guys can't pick it up as quickly as they did?

I think we'll go 6-6 this season, but that won't be enough for a bowl with the 2 I-AA games. 7-5 would be fantastic all things considered, but either way I think we'll be a contender for the ACC title within 3 seasons.

7-5 is not fantastic any way you cut it.

CPJ's first Navy team won two games period. Hopefully our guys can pick it up better than them. And I'm saying that while fully expecting to struggle. Though he did beat Army that year, and while 2-10 would certainly be a disappointment, if the second was over U[sic]GA....well, I'm just sayin'.....

After seeing T-Day?

Three wins. Things may change but see no reason to be overly optimistic, after seeing T-Day.

CPJ doesn't have "his people" on the O-line yet and the heads of the "previous head coach's people" are not into this O yet. Things may change and I sure hope so but so far, this O stinks!

I've been watching this same ACC conference and I keep seeing the NFL drafting the ACC ahead of all other conferences the last few years. I'm not sure about the college level, but the NFL seems to think the ACC is better than the rest of the country.
But they may be wrong.

It's all about the coaching. ACC had an awful bowl record but only because we lost every single close game.

I have no idea what your point is. Mine was that Navy improved 2 games from the previous year in CPJ's first season.

So, you're saying a 7-5 record next year would be "unacceptable," Kyle?

Personally, I hope Paul Johnson is saying it. We could have kept Chan in place and went 7-5 next year and saved ourselves some $$.

Good coaches tailor their scheme for the players they have. CPJ is a good coach, and with Nesbitt, Booker, Dwyer, Evans, Cox, Smith, Thomas, and others on offense; if CPJ can't find a way to score he isn't near the coach I think he is. There are a lot of athletes on the roster, and a new coach should STILL be expected to come in a win immediately. We probably won't contend for the ACC title this year; but we should be one of the top 4-5 teams in the conference.

I think his point is that it is a lot harder to improve by two wins from seven wins than it is to improve by two wins from zero wins.

At Navy, there was nowhere to go but up. At GT, as the Gailey supporters pointed out repeatedly, it could just as easily get worse before it gets better.

Both defense and offense are changing considerably this year. In some ways, every player is a freshman to the new way of doing things. And the coaches don't have players to fit their systems in place yet.

I expect a bumpy ride.

I agree, Aero. But it should also be pointed out that some of the great ones had losing seasons their first go 'round. Sometimes you have go take a step backwards before you can take two steps forward. Remember, we didn't hire PJ so he could win one more game in 2008 than Gailey would have. We hired him so that we could be a national player again, even if it takes a year or two.

All that being said, I think 7-5 is still a very realistic expectation for next season. We've got talent at a lot of positions. I, myself, especially want us to dominate next year, because it will be my last season as a student here. But, if we don't quite reach seven wins, I think we might want to hold off on the pitchforks and torches for a few more years.

Fair enough, but I didn't say I expected us improve by 2 wins. I simply said that Navy improved, contrary to the many statements that it took so long for CPJ to install his system. I think we'll be okay. I mean, it's not like we were some kind of offensive juggernaut or anything. The D will be just fine.

My only expectation is that we will continue to learn the offense and that we will continue to get better at it. How good we are able to get, I don't know, but I strongly suspect that by the end of the year we will be at our best.

The offenses in the ACC don't worry me, with the possible exception of UNC, who I think will be very tough to stop this year. I believe we'll hold our own in the league. My only concern is that the defenses in the league will not be easy to develop the ofense against, but we will do it in time.

I have no real prediction, but I do predict we'll be playing well come T'giving weekend.

I think there is a difference between the situations. Navy's offense probably rated a 1 on a scale of 1-10 before CPJ got there, so it was really easy to improve upon. If the first year of CPJ's triple option rates a 3, that's still a 3x improvement. Our offense last year was certainly a lot better than Navy's was when CPJ took over. If it rated a 6 or 7, then the first year of CPJ's triple option would be a step back where it was be a step forward for Navy. By the end of the year I think our offense will be at or above what it was when Chan was here, but I think we will struggle in the early going as we work out the kinks, so overall we will probably see a worse year than last. Hope I'm wrong though.

Personally, I am willing to "throw away" next season and accept a 6 win season AS LONG AS we can see progress in several areas in which we have been lacking in the CCG years:

1. Preparedness - In too many games under CCG, I felt that the team was not adequately prepared to play.

2. Toughness - IMHO there were a number of games in which we quit when we were down or behind. I'd like to see us be mentally and physically tougher.

3. Passion - I never felt that CCG was totally engaged.

I think that just Paul Johnson's presence may automatically help us to accomplish #1 and #3. If we accomplish all of the above then I think that 2009 could be a great year.

Since when did UNC become this unstoppable force? I've seen more than one post in the last week where people expect the Tar Holes to be a really good team. I don't expect them to be any better than we are.
