Why did Miami's loss push Tech out of Top 25?

Georgia Tech has definitely struggled in some areas, but this team was ranked #14 and was dropped out of the Top 25 totally because they lost to Miami, who is ranked 9th?

I thought Tech and Miami would transpose poll positions with Tech at #20 or #21 and Miami at #13 or #14, but out of the poll completely? What's up with that?

Many in the media are saying the "U" is back, and maybe that is the case, but why is Georgia Tech being penalized so heavily as if they lost to an unranked, non-conference team by double-digits?

Pollsters wanted to give more weight or credibility in their win over Ga. tech to justify a higher ranking for Miami, but uses the opportunity to push Tech out completely.

I always felt AP poll (writers) never give Tech enough credit. It was the Coaches poll that gave us 1/2 of a national championship.

Because we earned a out-of-the-top-25 ranking. If we go 3-0 in our next group of 3, we'll be back in the rankings. Anything less and we don't deserve to be ranked.

If we lost to a team ranked #9 midway through the season with a 5-1 record we could stay in, but most of the voters are wary of newcomers. Too many teams come into the polls as a flash in the pan, but aren't good enough to stay there. Most of us have enough faith in the coaching staff and players to believe we are one of the 25 best teams in the country, but Tech doesn't have an established record in that respect. It's frustrating and doesn't make a lot of sense, but let's face it, the polls don't mean anything right now. Let's play the underdog role as much as we can.

Win this week and we'll be right back in. UNC is ranked low in the polls. Beat them and we take their spot.

The polls this year are a joke. BYU beats a depleted OU team, and jumps 11 spots? Washington gets ranked? Schitzophrenic is the only word to describe the polls this season.

I agree, if we beat UNC, then we'll take their spot.

Because if it weren't for a real shaky holding call we'd be 0-2 vs Div 1 opponents.

Probably because out of most of the 12 quarters of FB they've played so far this year many, many have shown to the college FB world (2 nationally televised games) that we aren't good and that we don't deserve to be in the Top 25.

Because GT looked awful in front of a national television audience. (Most) pollsters saw that game and voted us #26 or #27.

Also perception and history figures somewhat into the equation. Miami moves up, well mainly because they defeated two ranked teams on national television, but also because they are Miami. It's the same reason that Notre Dame almost always shows up in a preseason poll --and why they will vault to the top ten if they start a season 3-0.

The perception for GT is different. Tech does not get the respect nor do they have the reputation of a Miami or Notre Dame. It will take a couple of years (perhaps longer) of consistent winning for GT to vault up into that kind of 'poll respect.' UGA has 'poll respect.' If UGA defeats ASU, then LSU they'll be back in the top 15 --probably top 10 with a win over the Vols.

Look at the AP poll for this week and see where UNC, Kansas, TCU and Cincinnati are ranked. There are anywhere from four to eight one-loss teams ranked ahead of these undefeated teams. These teams do not have the 'poll respect' of Ohio State, USC, Oklahoma or UGA.

Ok,

Lets do it this way. Who do you think should not be in the polls ahead of us? We'll start with the 2-1 teams...because I feel justification to put a 2-1 team in ahead of a 3-0 team has to be pretty darn good.

Oklahoma -- Lost by 1 pt when their starting QB went out to a ranked team.

VPI -- Lost by 10 (at the end) to a top 5 team* and has beaten a ranked team.

USC -- Lost by 3 to a very bad team, but beat a top 10 team.

OSU -- Lost by 3 pts to a top 5 team.

OkST -- Lost by 10 to an unranked team, but beat a top 15 team.

FSU -- Lost by 4 at the last second to a ranked team, and beat a top 10 team by 20 pts.

BYU -- Lost by 20+ pts to FSU, but beat a top 5 team.

UGA -- Lost by 2 TDs to a ranked team.

UW -- Lost by 9 to a top 15 team, and beat a top 5 team.

Neb -- Lost by 1 pt at the last second to a top 15 team.

Out of ALL those listed, the only one you can make a valid argument for is UGA. But at no point during the UGA loss did they look like they were being demoralized the way our team did against Miami. As I said, I won't include the 3-0 teams, because they haven't lost yet. I'd say we got put about where we should. I can't argue that any team with a loss in the standings is any worse than we are. I can try and argue about UGA, but the fact is, they looked a whole hell of a lot better against OKST than we did against Miami.

*note -- All rankings were at the time of the game played.

unforgiven108, I looked at the 2-1 teams as well. Their resumes all beat us hands down. Thanks for posting. Wish it weren't true but it is (for now).

Who gives a crap about rankings right now? It's like freaking out that you don't have enough saved for retirement at the age of 25. It doesn't matter at this moment. We are still in a good position. What we should be worried about is UNC.

Yes but it is important to put as much in as possible at the age of 25. How much is currently in there, I agree does not matter. But every cent you get in now is huge. :)

But I think we've digressed off topic. It doesn't matter what ranking we are at all this year. I don't see a 1 loss team getting to the NC game, so ranking will not affect us except in the eyes of the recruits.

Just keep winning and let everyone else throw their arbitrary numbers around.

Did we look like a top 25 team last week? I think not.

Neither did USC
Neither did Okie State 2 weeks ago

We are out of the rankings because rankings are bs. They are driven by media hype and history. When it comes to GT, they are also driven by a prejudice against the system of offense we run.

No, we're out of the rankings because in our last three national TV games(LSU, Clemson, and UM) we've looked like crap in all of them. Whereas USC and Okie State both won a game on national TV against ranked opponents this season, and didn't have the bowl debacle we had. If we had clobbered Clemson or even not looked like crap against them, we'd still be in the rankings.
