Why does Tenuta get a pass?

I thought VT schemed a great game on offense.

They brought their no. 1 and 2 receivers out of the slot and backfield where they were picked up by linebackers. They took that all night long until we adjusted finally in the 3rd quarter. Then they attacked the corners who were all alone. Glennon (who doesn't always) made some throws and the receivers made some plays.

If you don't think that Tenuta is a good DC, you're entitled to your opinion. I'm sure there are some people out there somewhere that think Michael Jordan wasn't a good basketball player or that Tiger Woods is overrated or that the Beatles were not a good band. I'm not going to take the time to try to convince them otherwise because clearly that is pointless.

I do think he's a good DC, but I'm getting tired of the JOHN TENUTA SOOPER GENIUS tag when it's become obvious that he apparently can't adjust his plan until halftime and teams with above average QB's kill him.

We turned the ball over 6 times and gave up an onside kick. We gave them 7 bonus possessions from good field position. I'm surprised that they did not put up 40+ on us, but even with the 7 bonus possessions we held them under their scoring average in ACC play. Take away just half those turnovers and we hold them under 20.

We are averaging less than 16 points per game in ACC play and less than 15 ppg if you take out the defensive scores. We have only scored 8 offensive TD's in 6 ACC games.

If we had the best defense in the NFL, I doubt we would have a better record.

Hey genius' I don't know if anyone realized but we were the #8 ranked defense coming into the game in the nation. I didn't hear anyone complaining about the D after we held Clemson to 3 yards of rushing with two stud running backs. That being said we have the 2 worst corners in college football.

Why does Tenuta get a pass?

I'll tell you why.

VT had the ball for 37 minutes...that's roughly 1.5 football games worth of time on offense.

Second, he gets a pass because historically, he has been awesome. Did none of y'all think that our secondary was going to get exposed this year? Are you delusional?

We don't have a shut-down corner on this team. Do you want JTenuta to completely abandon WHAT HE BELIEVES IN?

What he does works...even with inferior talent. Our secondary is ATROCIOUS. Give him some superior talent with Giff Smith recruiting and we're lights out the next 4 years, no doubt.

So yeah, Tenuta gets a HUGE pass.

I realize some of y'all are upset but 6 years of CONSTANTLY putting our D in bad positions doesn't help matters and Jon Tenuta STILL puts up a TOP 25 defense EVERY YEAR!

What more do you dumbasses want!?!?!?!?

VT had the ball for 37 minutes...that's roughly 1.5 football games worth of time on offense. You want to get off the field, get a stop. Our offense didn't help but the defense could not stop VT in the first half.

Second, he gets a pass because historically, he has been awesome. Did none of y'all think that our secondary was going to get exposed this year? Are you delusional? It's his job to design his defense to his players.

We don't have a shut-down corner on this team. Do you want JTenuta to completely abandon WHAT HE BELIEVES IN? He's supposed to believe in stopping the other team. Are you suggesting that if he doesn't have the pieces it's acceptable for him to call his D like he does? His job is to help us win, not set the sack record.

What inferior talent? We don't know if our secondary is attrocius because we play that soft zone all the time. Just what kind of talent does he need? If he has all 5 star DBs I could probably look good. His job is to look good with what he has.

I want the defense to play to their ability and I want D coaches who can adjust to what's happening on the field. We did at half time, why can't we adjust in the 2nd quarter? Tenuta is a very good DC, but he's not above reproach. This hero worship from some is ridiculous.

the defense gave up 27 points! This is college football with scores routinely in the 30s and 40s, yet our offense can't overcome a couple of damn touchdowns. Please.

Tenuta has earned much more slack than Gailey for his past results.

Very True. I felt like the D was done way before they were tired. If teams wanna win against us, just give your QB a little time to throw a 7 yard pattern and enjoy your weekend.

I don't think Tenuta gets a pass all the time. He seems to have issues adjusting, and when he can't blitz and get pressure on the QB he doesn't change that even though it's obvious it's not working. Take the BC game for example. No pressure on Ryan, their O Line was protecting him and we continue to place our questionable DB's in one-on-one coverage. To me that's not playing to your strengths or adjusting when your game plan is not working. Thus we gave up over 500 yards to BC. Other than that every time the D would get a stop against VaTech, the O would come out a turn the ball over. So I'm amazed the score wasn't higher. We can't expect the D to score all the points also.

Haha. I was thinking the same thing during the game. It's like madden where you keep running the same play over and over and it keeps working. He kept throwing that out to the right side for 7-8 yards every time.

I've said it before. Our defense is totally one dimensional. If the opposing offense can get the pass off, we are hosed. We give up 3rd and longs all day. Tenuta has been figured out. I don't give him a pass at all. I don't think I want a guy who can't make an adjustment to be our head coach, for those Tenuta lovers.

On the other had we aren't going to win many games putting up 3 points....

Avery Roberson is a senior and has played horribly this year. Jamal Lewis is only good at run support. Jahi can close very quickly and cover well, he's just too small. Do I even have to mention #6? MB#1 should start but he doesn't know as much as DJay Jones yet...we have no capable back ups. NONE. Hell, Marvious Hester would make half these guys look like pee wee football players.

Say whatever you want about the players. Tenuta has played a part in the recruiting and development of every one of them. As for the back ups, there you may have a valid point since we are still short some scholarships.

Let's look at field position and how VT got the ball when they scored:

VT 25 [FG] Kickoff (not a turnover)
VT 41 [TD] Onside Kick
GT 40 [TD] Interception
VT 23 [TD] Fumble
VT 44 [FG] Interception

Meanwhile, look what our offense did with the following field position:

GT 49 [Managed to get FG]
GT 48 [No Points]
GT 42 [No Points]
VT 32 [No Points]

LSU has given up 24, 43, 24, and 31 in their last 4 games. I guess they are a one trick pony too.

Do you really want to compare to LSU?

"LSU didn't need any small-school sacrificial lambs on its early season schedule to post a couple of gaudy blowouts. The tenacious Tigers made Virginia Tech look like a pushover instead of the ninth-ranked team in the nation. "

VT gained a total of 149 yards against LSU. Was 2-14 on third down.

The only teams that have scored more than 20 against LSU were Kentucky, Florida, Auburn, and Alabama. These aren't the putrid offenses of the ACC. Heaven help us if we had to face those 4 teams in a row.

This defense has given up 24, 28, 28, and 27 to offenses no where near the caliber of Florida or Kentucky.
