Why does Tenuta get a pass?

well the def WAS NOT SHARP and for some reson this yr a VERY experienced D has not come out prepared as we generally expect in some games-so the DEF is part of the problem but a SMALL part

otoh-wait til next yr and you will be DYING to get back this DEF, count on it

This is one of those times when stats can be pretty decieving. When you look at the rankings for total defense you'll find 5 ACC teams in the top 25, (with of course VT at the top of the ACC as always). When you look at the total offense rankings you'll find like 1 ACC school in the top 25. That basically means you have good defenses playing against crappy offenses and thus showing up in the top of NCAA overall rankings.

Sorry for the late reply...I've had a busy weekend :)

I guess the point of my post was to say that, consistently, we play very good defense. There are a few games every now and then where our defense gets torched, but the vast majority of the time our defense outplays our offense. Don't have the stats to quote on hand, but I'm fairly sure that over the past 6 years, even with Calvin, we were on the low end of the NCAA rankings on offense.

With that said, it does sometimes seem that we're slow to make adjustments on defense. We blitz 5-6 players and leave a 10 yard cushion, and most deep plays draw single coverage. Our corners just aren't good enough to consistently leave them out there like that.

Take all of this with a grain of salt...i don't pretend to know anything about football :)
