Here is a story for a local TV station on Spurrier:
In fact, it was the recruiting trail that got Spurrier's name in the headlines here and on national sports websites.
Stories were written that Spurrier was seen on the campus of Duke University. Spurrier says he was in the area to visit a recruit who's already committed to the Gamecocks, and decided to stop by his old coaching home for a visit. Once again, he says he's firmly a part of the Gamecock Nation.
"I've already committed to my role here at South Carolina," he says. "Like I've told so many people, I'm looking forward to coaching Stephen Garcia, and all these freshman receivers and defensive players."
"We'll have a stronger team next year," he says. "Whether or not we'll play really well, that comes down to making plays at the end of the game and we didn't do that a few times this year."
Spurrier may have to win games next year without one of his top assistants. Defensive Coordinator Tyrone Nix is reportedly formally interviewing Friday for the Southern Miss head coaching job. Spurrier says he hopes Nix gets it.
"If he gets offered the Southern Miss job, he should take it. It's a wonderful opportunity."
